If he is a good kid, is respectful, makes decent grades and keeps his nose clean, cut him some slack. Give him a little rope and maybe add a couple of responsibilities around the house to help out. He will be an adult soon. Best wishes!

Celebrate. I hate that stupid game.

Is he a sophomore on a team of 5 senior starters or a sophomore on a team of 5 sophomore starters.
My sophomore year I did not start on the varsity football team at the start of the season. I did start on the JV team. After 4 games, coach made some changes and I started the 5th game, and never looked back.
If he’s frustrated because he’s not starting, give it time.
If he’s no longer liking the sport, or doesn’t see a path to playing time, finish the season then try something else.

Throw a football or baseball with him and enjoy the time together.

Teen pregnancy? He'll be fine, just give him condoms and tell him you aren't housing any grandchildren.

Tell him he can bail, but he will fill that time with something else.

Take him hunting, fishing, or just camping. I would find a way to spend the time we have together in a way we both enjoy

How are his nunchucks skills?
If they’re good enough, perhaps he can get into a gang.

He wants to complete this season and be done with it.
He’s making a grown up decision by finishing what he committed to doing, playing on a team for the season.

I might just make him play.
Horrible idea. If you think he doesn’t like it now, he’s going to hate it more if your force him.

He just wants to workout, work, and do school.

When did it stop being okay for a kid to just be a kid?
Also, mandatory job at 15? Is that common?

Buy him a set of golf clubs and driving range/course passes.

He is a very good player
So the starting 5 must be a force. What position does he play?
If he doesn't want to play anymore don't make him. He might change his mind as the season goes on. If he doesn't then no big deal. Don't be that parent that makes their kid play and then they are on the team and don't give a shite because they don't want to be there.

Is basketball the only thing he can do? Maybe get a job? What else does he have interest in?

Basketball is kind of queer anyway
