Texas Monthly: The Great Cajun Turtle Heist (article about outlaw turtle hunters)

Alligator snapping turtle populations in Texas were dwindling. One family of smugglers from Louisiana had been poaching 100s of them, many over 100 lbs., for years. This article describes some of their experiences and how the feds caught them. It's an interesting read.

If I caught one that big, he'd be cleaned and eaten quick.

Though Stinebaugh had been trying for years to stop the family’s turtle poaching, he found much to admire in Colo. “He was almost like a man plucked out of the past, a Cajun from one hundred and fifty years ago,” Stinebaugh said. “A lot of people try to pretend that ‘I’m this Cajun living the life in the swamp,’ but this guy really did. There’s a certain authenticity there that’s hard to find.”
Good read. I love sauce piquante, but I have never hade the turtle version.

Are snapping turtles better to eat then softshell and others? I know some people that love turtle and I've had it its just like dark meat chicken, rabbit, etc. when stewed IMO. Nothing amazing but good. I just don't understand why you'd poach a snapping turtle when you can catch a bunch of other turtles legally?

Is the juice really worth the squeeze on cases like this? Hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on the case, 2 people committed suicide, 2 incarcerated and lots of lives torn apart because of...turtle poaching?

Poaching is just another form of stealing. Do you like thieves?

Yes. Wildlife is a public resource. If there are no penalties and repercussions, people like this will act with impunity until the resource is gone.
Big turtles grow slow, and reproduce late in life. They are extremely vulnerable to exploitation.
These people were ignorant, disgusting poachers, drug addicts, and welfare slobs. The word is better off without them.

Growing up we caught a pile of them and some really big ones, my pawpaw would almost wreck if he saw one crossing the road and catch it.
Sauce piquant and soup was very good and so was just smothered down in a gravy.
I’m a long way from a PETA but knowing how long it takes for them to get that big I won’t kill those big ones anymore.

Do you like government wasting tons of money on turtle poaching where there's no landowner or trespassing involved?

I do not see this as wasting. I see it as protecting wildlife.

My brother in law and I caught a huge snapping turtle like those, we cleaned it and made a soup. I felt so bad, I have never kept another one. It was probably 100 years old.
