I remember him as the 'high ceiling, but moderate floor'. Coming in at least as "3&D" because of his long wingspan for a SG.

He could shoot (38% in college), but as a combo guard he was too light & not a strong facilitator. Then he completely got yips

Rockets have a ton of young guys on that team plus vets who take up Whitmore position. Their starters play a ton of minutes. Plus they’re gonna play amen before Whitmore

Yea I wasn’t saying it in a Whitmore sucks kind of way I think he will be good it was just that we were talking about him and the news dropped so I figured I’d mention it

Was NAW not suppose to be a high floor guy coming out?

NAW turned out to be about what you expect at pick #17. He's now a regular rotation player on a good team. Jaxson and Kira turned out to be bad picks, but Dyson, Trey, and Hawkins were good. Overall, we've used our 1st-round picks well under the Griffin regime.

We also passed on that before. Passed on Darius Garland who I said we should have drafted that year. Have nothing to show from a draft where we could have had an all star talent

This board has so much revisionist history with that pick. I’m not saying you didn’t want Garland and I give Bronc props for being high on Garland but at the time and long after the draft the board loved Hunter. Especially during the Hawks playoff run people were roasting Griff for not picking Hunter. Then Hunter ends up being injury prone and Garland becomes an all star and then the board is all over him and that should have been the pick.

I can go bump the thread but it’ll embarrass some people like the Lauri M one from the other day.

But I would have gambled on Garlsnd for the upside and b/c I didn’t trust Ball becoming our main pg. With that being said I woukd have been happy with Hunter and even said he was the safer choice, especially with Garland being Klutch.

But the pick should have been one of the two. Not trading down. Huge F up by Griff.

We can't stay at 14 now AND take Hawkins. We have to take someone else or trade back.

Since this is lacking context, I said this because of who else was still available, not because I didn't want Hawkins. I did want Hawkins, but I thought we should trade back to pick up something extra and take him a few spots later.

I've been a huge Hawkins supporter the moment we drafted him. There were others on the board I thought we easily go to other teams first I didn't want.

I’ll admit I would have drafted Whitmore. At 14 you roll the dice on a player that slipped and should not have lasted that long. Kinda hilarious everyone thumping their chest right now. Whitmore just turned 19. How did Hawkins look at 19? He stayed in school an extra two years to develop. Hawkins is about nba ready a prospect as you are gonna be. He already had elite shooting. Glad to see he is showing to be more capable in other areas than what scouts thought. It’s good for the team so I’m happy. And I’ll gladly eat crow in 3-4 years if Whitmore is still riding the pine and not producing. Until then, not a chance

Since we had a lot of threads like this earlier in the year, thought I’d bump this thread since the season is just about over.

Hawkins final averages 7.8 points | 2.2 rebounds | 1.0 assists | 38.2 % FG
36.6 3P% 83% FT

Cams final averages 12.3 points | 3.8 rebounds | 0.7 assists | 45% FG | 36% 3P | 68% FT

This is from an article on his rookie year.
“HIs scoring was lethal — 13.3 points in 20.4 minutes in 40 games after receiving consistent minutes — and the signs were there of a legitimate go-to option down the stretch”

And remember he’s two years younger than Hawkins. So do I still need to crow???

You do.

Cams coach is Ime Udoka, Hawks is Willie Green.

Lol, here comes the excuses. I thought I’d have to wait a couple years before I bump this thread but here we are after season one.

These are facts:

Prior to December Hawk was 3rd only to Wemby and Chet in rookie PPG.

He led all rookies in 3PT made and led the team at that moment all the way up to Feb in 3PT made.

Hawk literally won the Dallas game by HIMSELF.

Willie Green because he sleeps with Defense every night benched Hawk for what seems like the month of Jan, Feb, and March.

So no they aren't excuses. Our coach is an imbecile.

I’m not arguing that. There was a lot of chest thumping at the beginning of the season while Cam was glued to the bench as you can tell by this thread.

But you see that stat, 13 points in 20 mins when he got into the rotation the second half of the season. Not bad for a 19 year old. Like I said in the thread, it’s much to early to say who was right or wrong.

I’m sure those chest thumpers will ghost this thread now of course lol.
