I wonder what the statistics say about health outcomes for children that were raised by parents with poor eating habits?
Obese parents are more likely to have obese kids.
Obese kids almost universally grow up to be obese adults. There are pediatrics studies on this subject. Frankly I view it as child abuse because the outcomes are as bad for their health as physical violence, just more delayed.

I just wanted to point out that from this explanation in the OP:
We have probably dozens of people who seem to believe the guy in question expects to have plenty of sex with younger and more attractive women.
That seems like a strawman. Dude is going to be poor and not desirable. From what we've been told about the situation he doesn't expect to improve his sexual opportunities. He just wants out of the toxic relationship in which neither partner loves each other.
As a cultural stereotype we are comfortable with criticism directed at men and much less likely to critique women. The guy would seem like a possible example of this.
He will be doing worse than the ex wife in every metric after they separate including social support, access to the children, and financial outcomes (she can expect the house, child support, alimony, and social support).
In my single years I dated a couple of divorced single mothers. They outright admitted gaining weight with pregnancy because they didn't care anymore. But after the divorce they lost that weight so they could date with more success. 30 pounds overweight is a lot but 100 pounds is a problem she needs to address and others should never excuse (if they care about her or her family).

This isn't true, but, so far you're down with your spouse being fat, depressed, mentally ill, sexually unattractive, and hooked on pain pills so the rest of us must look picky by comparison. At some point you have to have some self-respect.
Ouch.

Some of his blood relatives are disowning him?
That sounds a little unusual for someone professing to be totally innocent....Upset? Angry? Sure.
Cutting all ties? Makes me wonder if your buddy isn't being 100% truthful with you about everything.

Having kids does a number on our bodies and while some women can bounce back the majority can’t
So why do we now have an obesity epidemic in America when we didn’t decades ago?
Because it has little to do with children and more to do with food choices and activity levels. We used to have lots more children and much less obesity. I saw an old friend from graduate school and she complained about what children did to her body.
I said nothing but thought she was 30 pounds overweight before the kids and about the same afterwards. That plus age adds pounds to most people unless they are really serious about health.

Yeah we dont know but theres nothing to lead you to believe that. Most all the men I know who got divorced are fricking miserable afterwards. Cant remember one of them bragging about being happier living alone in a one room apartment.

I dgaf about her. I care about our society thinking divorce is just a casual thing. Ive had several of my friends whose wives have left them for petty reasons like this guy did & its been awful. For them & the children. Divorce should be a last resort if there are young children involved.

If your own family is siding with an ex, it’s a red flag. Maybe it’s the family that has issues, but one needs to take a hard look at himself before reaching that conclusion.

I think whether someone chooses to leave a marriage or stay is personal and no amount of shaming is going to convince them to stay. If they do there’s going to be a lot of resentment.
I’m in no position to judge your friend, but I’d say the grass, sometimes, really is greener.
