I'm not certain Clemson could have stopped those passes to Chase in one-on-one coverage if the routes had been sketched out for him in advance. Terrell's coverage was fantastic on both bombs, as well as on the shorter TD. Burrow-Chase were just better. Same with the putaway TD to Marshall.

This was my take from that game. At the beginning, we expected Chase to receive double coverage. I think Clemson was able to kinda hide what they were doing at first. When Steve E/JB/Chase et al recognized they were only single covering Chase, it was over.

I also agree that Terrell’s coverage was spot on. Chase with JB was just in another world.

I’m not sure exactly how effective sign stealing and in person scouting is in today’s world. It sure didn’t help Clemson in the Championship Game.

Good topic.

We don't care about signs. We're freaks.

if you don't want your signals stolen, do a better job of encrypting them.

There is a very big difference in these two scenarios. Football signs are completely and intentionally displayed in a public forum for thousands of people to witness.

Someone hacking you would require subversive, intrusive measures by the perpetrator in order to gain access to your personal, protected data.

I still don't see what is wrong with scouting another team.

Scouting a team's strengths and weaknesses is different than paying for spies at the games to record and steal their signals and playcalls.

This is just further proof that NCAA needs to go to the NFL model of calling the play in through the helmet

sources said a frustrated coach Ed Orgeron told offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger, "Change it up."

The most surprising thing here is that Ed was aware enough to even notice
O was incapable of running a program, as he demonstrated at Ole Miss (and by running LSU into the ground).

But he was a defensive guy who'd been around the game for decades. He might not be the best at planning and scheming, but if the opposing defense "guesses right" and runs the perfect counter to an offense for 10 plays in a row, he's gonna notice that.

There's scouting and picking up tendencies, and then there's "man, those guys are in our huddle".

I can't say I've done the film room work to pick it up, but I would bet it's stuff like linebackers shifting pre-snap to stand and wait for a run, or drifting back to take away a crossing route; safeties coming in or going back "randomly, just happening" to be in perfect position for the WR's routes etc.

Yeah, he made a great Pelini hire without interviewing him. What a great general!

Nah, Woodwad made/forced that hire.

Changing signals can create confusion. If you have one hand sign that means a certain formation or play and then you change it every week or a few times throughout the season, you run the risk of confusing your own players.
I feel like playbook wristbands on everyone would prevent a bunch of this, but college football needs to let the players have radio helmets like the pro’s.

Alabama brought in Gregg Williams to stop the option. All they really had to do was rewatch the 9-6 game.

Greg Williams watched the LSU practices at the Saints facilities prior to the game and told Saban everything LSU was doing. They didn't bring in an NFL DC at a time when the option was rare in the NFL to teach them how to beat the option. They brought him in to show them the film of LSU's practices.
