Probably a Fox squirrel.

I grew up one county over from where I am now. Where I grew up and spent probably 25+ years I only saw a fox squirrel maybe twice. 20 miles east I see them damn near everyday.

They are bigger, slower, and seem to be more dumb. But they are cool as they come in a variety of colors. I have seen some that would best be described as calico.

I've killed a few over the years.

About 20 years ago I would see a cat squirrel with a white tail while on a deer stand. Every year we would try to get him during squirrel season but never saw him then. Yet for several years I would see him all morning when on the stand.

Our are is crawling with them. I suspect there almost as many blacks as greys. Have a pie bald one in a stand of pines near my office...wish I could shoot that thing

Have a healthy population in and around my pecan orchard in S AL. Killed one as a kid and my grandpa was so upset I vowed to never shoot one again.

I have still never seen a black gray squirrel. Lots of foxes in this area though.

I’ve found they are in pockets along the Mississippi River, on the La side. Don’t know about Miss side. They are at a disadvantage compared to fox squirrels because they are easier to spot. The black just stands out more.

Fox and grays can have either but most of what I see is the agouti fox squirrels

Googled this and it said you are correct on the grays. It said it is really only found in the Norther regions of their zone though. Around the Great Lakes Basin. I guess that is why I have never seen one lol

Count the teeth. A fox squirrel has 20 teeth. An eastern gray squirrel has 22.

It’s definitely a black fox squirrel. I can’t figure out how to post a picture of it.

You have to look behind the front incisors. There will be a tooth behind them
