Has any baseball prospect ever lived up to the hype as much as Bryce Harper?

Rookie of the Year
7x All Star
2x MVP

He slowed down a little bit in his earlier time in Philadelphia, but came back to win an MVP in 2021 and was an all star in 2022. He’s perhaps on his way to leading the Phillies to the WS again this year. Just an incredible career for a guy who found himself on the cover of SI as a 16 year old.

Excellent post. The answer is no. He is the LeBron, statistically speaking, of baseball, indubitably...

It’s safe to say he’s second all time behind only
Lebron as far as living up to hype.

I think he has. He has had a spotlight on him since a kid. Funny thing is just a few months ago I remember there being a thread on here about him not living up to the hype!

Yeah I’d say Tiger, then LeBron, but that’s splitting hairs by and large. Both have large contingents that believe they’re the GOAT in their respective sport.

Harper is a distance 3rd in an all-sports discussion.

For baseball, the only one I would say is A Rod. And Josh Hamilton for a few years.

In other sports, there are definitely more examples of guys who have massive hype and fulfill expectations.

Basketball has the highest hit rate.

Ken Griffey Jr. would be up there, right?

A-Rod is the closest I can come up with, but the thing that puts Harper over the top in this instance is that we had heard about him since his sophomore year of high school because he was essentially the baseball version of Todd Marinovich... except Harper actually lived up to the hype.

Josh Hamilton was obviously a top prospect, but I think his story is more about redemption.

Nobody is the Lebron of stats.

Maybe the hockey guy.

The mainstream sports fan didn't know who he was until his last year at SDSU.

The mainstream sports fan knew who Harper was his sophomore year of high school, or if not then, they definitely knew him by his junior year when he was getting his GED so he could play JUCO for a year.

For hockey, at least in more modern times Crosby and McDavid have delivered. Can't speak for the hype of guys like Gretzky or Lemieux as ways to follow them were far less back when they debuted.
