I don't see why this is so controversial. It could have been as good as The Godfather and it still would have flopped due to its release date. The highest grossing film of 2020 barely cleared $200 million domestic, and only one other film from that year made more than $100 million in the United States. Both were released prior to March 2020. Tenet made less than $60 million in the U.S. but still managed to be one of the Top 10 highest grossing movies for that year.

it's not controversial at all. It's just wrong. The movie failed because it was shite, not because of when it was released.

the only movies that made any money in 2020 were the ones released in Jan and feb

And? That has no bearing on Tenet being a shite sandwich. I suspect they released it when they did because they knew it sucked. Every other big blockbuster was "postponed"

you said it did poorly because it was bad. every movie did poorly during covid regardless of quality.

The movie absolutely flopped because of when it was released.
I saw it opening night with two other people and we were the only three people in the theater. If you think that was because of the issues you listed (which weren’t widespread until after release) instead of the pandemic, you just have a bone to pick.

So I'm game for punishment and will discuss the movie and not the lead or his father.
The movie doesn't really work. I wanted to see something and hoped something original instead of a superhero, transformers, or fast and furious would be good.
But it just wasn't and that made me sad. I don't really know how the studio didn't know it wouldn't work. They designed an evil American military industrial complex movie where the AI are the good guys and the Asian countries affected are hapless victims. So aside from being fundamentally misanthropic it has the advantage of appealing to neither American nor Asian nationals. And it does have a fundamentally misanthropic perspective. The humans are generally dumb and violent (but incompetent) or poor and powerless. The AI creatures are often noble. If you ever wanted to see robots dressed up as Buddhist monks this is your movie.
And did I mention pretty near everything makes very little sense? The robots are good just because. They sometimes say things about never hurting people while holding and shooting guns, grenades, what have you. Why they should be good is a good question. They never pursue that. Why the specific child at the movie center is impossible to recreate would be another question. Don't ask. That's just another Mcguffin so there's a unique character (sort of, sort of a copy).
The characters are often terribly incomplete and incompetent. Allison Janney is a good actor but not as a soldier or senior commander in hand to hand. The seal team guys are fat, dumb, inexpert, and unimpressive.
The emotional presence of the movie is poor. The philosophical intent of the movie is either vacuous or malignant. The points of transition at key turning points are often idiotic. The visual look is often good but it can't overcome the numerous other problems.
3/10 movie. Wait for it on free streaming if you like sci fi visuals with terrible nearly everything else.

Yes, he is a solid actor and only going to get better. I hope he doesn't put too much distance from his dad. I think he could do a pretty good Equalizer. As well as Easy Rawlins.

This thread is way too long. I saw this movie yesterday in IMAX. It was pretty but so boring and also made no sense. How many posts does it take to say that?

I saw this movie, JDW did a pretty good job. Problem was, IMHO, is it is pretty damn woke. AI as a new species, Americans as bad guys and "racist" against AI, good guys are the Asians, etc. CGI was amazing, otherwise didn't care for it at all.

Budget is 80 million. It looks great visually.
Way too early to say this flopped.

Then what was the reason Tenet flopped?
ummm being the first blockbuster released in December 2020 when half of hollywood and critics said don't go see this because it's encouraging people to leave home?

is it out of the theaters already? I wanted to actually go see this.

I’m confused. Is this thread about the creator or tenet?

Saw it this weekend. While it was nowhere near the greatest Sci film ever, it was extremely refreshing to sh
sit through a movie where I genuinly did not know anything about the characters or where the movie was going.
The child actor who plays the little girl is also one of the most talented and emotionally connecting actors I've seen on a film in a long time. She is the true star of the film. Some of her scenes just hit you like a meteor.
The film actually reminded me a lot of Oblivian, only much more rich and immwrsive in the setting and character development. It's also basically an Anime come to life.
If you watch it that way coming in, you it will be well worth your ticket price. I'd recommend seeing the film if you can in a theater and perhaps Hollywood will attempt to make more of these types of original films.
