Let's hope the skeeters down here don't get this.

quote:

Health officials in Jamaica have declared an outbreak of the dengue fever Saturday with at least 565 suspected, presumed and confirmed cases in the Caribbean nation.

Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness says the outbreak comes as its National Surveillance Unit "advised that Jamaica has surpassed the dengue epidemic threshold for July and August and is on a trajectory to do the same for the month of September."

"The dominant strain is Dengue Type 2, which last predominated in 2010," it said. "There are no dengue-related deaths classified at this time, however, six deaths are being investigated."

Health officials say there currently are at least 78 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne disease in Jamaica.

I wonder if those 6 dead people died in a car wreck and happened to have this virus in their system.

My neighbor got it several years ago, before most of us had even heard of Dengue fever. At that time she was around 30, I think, maybe younger. It took her several years to get over that shite.

Fun fact: Cuban soldiers fighting in the Angola bush war brought it back to this hemisphere.

Wouldn't ever lockdown or consider something like that but Dengue is a virus I never want to even think about.

Dengue is called "broke bone" virus because it feels like you have broken bones.

I want no part of that.

It's mosquito borne so lockdowns wouldn't help.

Nothing you can do about it except monitor blood in case a transfusion is needed. Asia has no issues with dealing with it because it is common, but doctors here don't have experience with it

Immune to a strain after you get it, but with each strain your risk of brain hemorrhage increases or something like that. Passes if you get bit by an infected mosquito. A few cases every year in the States but usually from people getting it elsewhere and flying here then symptoms show up

It is not an airborne thing and no shutdowns. But mosquito abatement increasing now would be a smart move

My son caught it in Thailand this summer. No treatment, just a week of fever and lethargy. There's a point 4-5 days in where if can become hemorrhagic. That's when it gets serious.

Supposedly, the second time you get it is when people are at higher risk, and there are 4 strains. You only get immunity to the strain you had.

The Democrats will call any border closures with Jamaica racist but will be Gung ho on lockdowns if it ends up spreading here.

How can we enforce mask mandates on the mosquitoes?

Would that be considered racist?

Omg no they won't
Stop with the bullshite political ignorance. That's not how dengue fever spreads and a lockdown sure as frick wouldn't do anything and no one will call for a lockdown

It's not airborne. A bite from an infected mosquito is how it spreads. You won't get it like you would the common cold, flu, or covid.

You protect yourself with pants and sleeves and using spray with DEET. Plus mosquito abatement

Severe cases require a hospital stay to monitor blood count
