Can someone please explain why you would want the ball if you win the toss?

The other team gets the ball after the half and if they score before the first half ends, they have a chance to win the possession battle.
It simply never makes sense to take the ball first. Even if you score 7, the other team can tie it and get the ball after half with the chance to go ahead.
If you kick it and your defense holds them to a tie or you're winning at half, you can either take the lead or expand it.

If your offense is clicking you can set the tone for the entire game with a quick touchdown
It really depends on what kind of team you’re rolling with and your opponent on which way you want to go on the coin toss

I never understood why BK does this. The biggest opportunity for a point swing in a game is the last 2 minutes of the first half and first 2 minutes of the second half. Up to a 14 point swing.

What if you take the ball at kickoff, score seven and end the half with another 7.
Force them to get predictable at second half and stop them with a 3nOut with only 1:45 gone?
I think it all adds up to the same thing. It comes down to who can execute better for 60 minutes.

The analytics show the first team to score has a higher winning percentage. If you feel you can score on your first possession, you have given yourself a statistical advantage. In the NFL, the first team to score wins 65% of the time, which is a very statistically significant number, I’m not sure what it is in college.

If we punch that ball in within 2 mins on the first drive of the game against FSU, we are winning by 21 at half.

The best argument I can really see is if you have an uber-physical running game it gives you an early start on wearing down the defense. Send the defense into the half as bruised and battered as possible.

There used to not be an option to defer to the 2nd half. It was either kick or receive. The other team gets to choose to start the 2nd half. Sometimes captains screw up and say kick instead of defer. That's why every so often you'll see a team receive both halves.

NFL games have less scoring so it’s more important to score first

There is some analytic that I dont personally agree with that says like the team that scores first wins 85% of the time or something like that. I heard that last year during one of our games. Evidently BK is the only one that ascribes to it.
