I’m the same way. Do people really desire cloud-based washing machines? Cars with voice-automated lighting?
You ever watch a video of someone reviewing the actual upgrades and features to new phones? There’s so much inane bullshite that people feign excitement for.
I’m getting old at 38, I guess. But I’d really like to have the knowledge for living off the grid in some mountain of Wyoming.

Technology and the convenience it promises will hang us all.
I wrote this on here last year. I don't know who I was responding to then, but it fits here:
No, convenience will be the end of us. The tech would not have as strong a footing if we weren't always looking for a more convenient life.
Convenience like your refrigerator having a camera and a touchscreen on it. Convenience like wearing a health monitor on your wrist 24/7/365. Convenience like your home's heating and air being controllable from the cloud. Convenience like being able to turn the porch light on from work or unlock the back door while on vacation so your neighbor can water your Peace Lily. Convenience like your car talking to your watch which talks to your phone. Convenience like having a box always listening so you can ask it if you should wear a rain jacket today or what year John Candy died. Convenience like every aspect of your gross consumerism being tracked with your every purchase in effort to give you a "better shopping experience".
We didn't crave this convenience all at once. Hell, we didn't even know we "needed" all that stuff to make our lives easier. At first, we thought, "Oh, being able to make a call from the road when I'm running late would really come in handy." Or, "Hey, not needing that phonebook to find my barber's number and hours is great!" Then, they found other ways to help us, to make life more convenient. Like the frog in the pot of water they kept gradually turning up the fire. Now, here we are, basically dependent on all those things meant to make us more comfortable. And, we expected them not to take advantage of that network of convenience? We expected them not to capitalize on the privacy we so willfully gave up? We expected them not to use that against us? We, unwittingly, while seeking convenience and comfort we didn't even know we needed, have allowed them a level of their own convenience that has never before been matched. It has never been easier to track and control us, and all for convenience.
Convenience will hang us all, but at least we will be comfortable waiting on the gallows.

I work in IT as well. I hate what technology and by extension social media has done to society. Damn you tigerdroppings!

Oh I love TD. If you think about it, TD is still old school Tech. It’s simple.. no bells and whistles.. chicken doesn’t keep trying to add dumb shot to the site. It’s simple and it works. That’s the kind of technology I like.
One of the reason i “liked” the Nest….
My buddy’s wife (no pics) owns a therapy business and she closed the business down for a week to go on vacation.
They received a message through the app that the AC in the office was set at 70. Why have the AC kicking at 70 when the business would be closed for 9 days?
Obviously someone forgot to check the AC temp before they closed for the week. Once they received that text about the AC being set at 70 they were able to change the temp of the office in another state to 78 degrees

Now I can’t use Xfinity until I get a new remote from them. Friday I should have my new remote. Can’t use Xfinity without their special cutting-edge remote control.
My refrigerator is fricked up. 2 years old (LG) will not get cooler than 47 degrees
My washing machine 1-2 years old is fricked up - the spin cycle doesn’t work
My Nest thermostat on my AC will not cool the fricking house. It’s always 79 degrees. I have rebooted it, changed all of the settings a hundred times, nothing. The actual AC unit is in perfect shape.
My 2022 car has rain sensors on the windshield. I never use the rain sensors because they are annoying when it actually does rain. Hasn’t rained in 4-5 days and the windshield wiper just stay on all day long (even though the sensor setting is turned off) - gotta take that into the shop to get fixed now
Ok, no tv whatever.
Go to check my schedule for tomorrow - I use a program called Acuity. Oh, they are down for maintenance until 6:00am PST (9:00 my time)
Well shite, I’m just going to burn sometime before bed and play MLB the big show on the Nintendo. NOPE - their system is down.
It’s just unbelievable how we have all of this technology but everything seems to not work correctly every single day.

That is simply not true. You choose to be where you are in many ways. Simple appliances still exist, and simple thermostats still exist, hell if you had a man card you would know how to jumper the thermostat to make your AC run.
People complain about tech but they rarely add up the time it has saved them when it eventually fails them. Vacuum tube TVs died, and cars without ECUs failed to run correctly far more often than today's cars.
I'm a child of the 70s and if you offered me an Xbox One and a flat panel 4k TV in exchange for my Atari 2600 and 13" TV even if the former was more finicky I would have taken it in a second. Just pick and choose tech wisely and for something like a router that fails keep a cheap backup. People love to complain about tech but the reality is if you stripped them of it (which they could do themselves if they weren't just bitching to bitch) they would have a fit.

That's why I drive 20 year old cars and read books. The only TV I watch is football. It's not unusual for me to go months without turning my TV on outside of football season.

I think the internet has been an overall negative to the human race. But, here it is and we’re stuck in world driven by it.
I think the thing with human race and technology is that everyone is racing to be the first and whatever implications it has, we just deal with it. We’re not going to sit around and say “well, this might not be so good for us 20 years down the road so let’s scrap it”. An analogy to this is the atomic bomb.
