That’s the root cause of the problem. Football needs semipro/farm teams like baseball. That way you get players that want to go to college. Baseball does it? why not football?
It’s fine if you want this. And it’s not a terrible idea
Just don’t bitch about the quality of play in CFB if the NFL ever did this.

So a kid has the athletic ability to play football on the collegiate level, gets a full ride to college and a potential opportunity to play in the NFL and yet he’s a victim?
That’s a bs excuse. You don’t have to be smart to get a college degree. Some of the biggest morons I’ve ever met are college graduates. It’s not like they’re forcing these kids into getting engineering degrees while they’re there.

Dexter Manley got a certificate for reading/writing or a GED after he retired from the NFL !!

To be honest, education these days is overrated. Men with trade skills make this country run. Yes some of those skills take some what of an education tonattaon the skills but regardless, education is overrated

Down vote the comment saying this is what's wrong w college football. These guys have the best of everything and personal counselors telling them over and over what's right and what's wrong. At some point it becomes the person's responsibility.

I hope if you need heart surgery that your surgeon will have had an education. I am glad mine did or I would have died 21 years ago. I hope the aeronautical engineer who designed the plane you next fly on had an education too. I won't "belabor" the point.

You forgot cheating. Football players have been getting people to take their tests for them for decades. It’s highly effective and nobody gives a shite

If he is really that good he will complete five years of college with minimum body wear and make some real money in the NFL. I wish him nothing but the best this year and going forward, but sometimes life sucks and he has the talent and opportunity to make a tremendous amount of money in the NFL.
This is not to say the NCAA is without fault…they should be shut down

Emery came from the best school districts in Louisiana..

I can empathize with him him to a certain degree, as I am ADHD to the max and traditional schooling was never the best for me. So I get it.
That being said he put himself there and what’s on the line is absolutely worth the sacrifices he needs to make today to succeed.

I don’t think people would like the college football product if high schoolers who didn’t want to go to college could go to a quality semi-pro league.

He dug his own hole and O's system of complete player independence meant nobody was around to put Emery in line.
Blame everyone except the misguided individual. Emery has had every opportunity to succeed.
How many would love to have his skill and opportunity.
It wasn't Coach O nor Coach BK.
I guess it was the Coaches fault
for Guice and C Collins misadventures as well.
Were the coaches responsible for Williams success. He was a walk on.

I supervised kids that had graduated from H.S. that couldn't read. What's wrong with our high schools?
Posted on 8/31/23 at 7:44 am to SwampyWaters
This isn't on the universities. They give them all the help they need, some of which maybe questionable.
This comes down to the parents and the public schools that condone failing grades as long as they excel in their sport. You start flunking these guys in middle school and high school I bet they learn real quick how to do HW and study.

If that was an option, then things could be different. The NFL could fund one, but it would cost them, and I doubt you would have owners in line to spend money that way.
They would absolutely find one if they didn’t get it for free with the current college system.

Wrong. NFL can not draft right out of high school (because they made an agreement with the NCAA because it’s so profitable for colleges and the NFL basically gets a free minor league). Shut down college football all together and see how quickly the NFL changes it’s tune of drafting out of high school.

Yeah because it doesn’t take any work at all to be a top athlete in a sport. I’m sure you are the pinnacle of athleticism (as long as you too get to self report your weight and height)

Emery situation is a classic example of what's wrong with college football
Maybe some guys with a weak academic record, with the right help from tutors at college, can get through. So they'd get to play college football and possibly get a degree, and even if not, they'd have a couple years of attending college behind them.
This is a bad thing???
Posted on 8/31/23 at 8:49 am to SwampyWaters
Whats the solution? To not give him a chance to further his playing career and earn a college degree?
Leaving him in poverty doesn't seem like a better solution than giving him a chance to figure it out in college.
