Was this a cold front that got in the gulf and then blew up?
Without getting too in the weeds...
An arctic airmass starting driving into the eastern part of the country. At the same time, a low pressure formed down in Texas or Mexico. As the low worked east, a sharp temperature gradient set up between the arctic airmass to the north and the tropical gulf airmass to the south.
Coupled with that was the position of the jet stream and an upper level trough. This provided a huge boost to the lift to rapidly strengthen the low pressure, which had that temperature gradient to feed on.

Ron DeSantis
@GovRonDeSantis
Duke Energy has been staging 5,000 of their own linemen along with trucks and other assets in preparation for #Idalia.
Florida Power and Light, TECO, and Co-ops and municipal utilities are also staging assets ready to deploy as soon as it is safe.
We have at least 25,000 linemen ready to respond in impacted areas, and we will have 30,000-40,000 linemen staged by the end of the day.

@GovKemp
has issued a State of Emergency order for all of #Georgia in preparation for Hurricane #Idalia's anticipated impact. Currently, the storm system is expected to move through the state Wednesday, bringing heavy rainfall and damaging winds throughout Southeast Georgia.

A bit off topic but does anyone know where to find storm surge info on a particular area?
Say I want to find out what storm surge was in Camille or Katrina for various areas- is there a website for that?

NHC Director is on The Weather Channel now. He says they still expect rapid intensification.

She is directionally to the W of us. Still pretty far out. We are definitely seeing wind and rain. Nothing to be concerned about, here, but where her storm hits, it's gonna make an impact. The storm surge will be...unfortunate.
