I’m also entering year 18. This year I’m not only teaching, but I’m also going to drive a bus. I obtained my CDL over the summer because there’s a shortage of bus drivers.

Year 15 for me.
Same issues as every year:
1) My introversion. I like my students and enjoy my job, but it wears me out. Social interactions - especially with needy, high energy teenagers - exhaust me like no other. Even good, easy days leave me a puddle of mud by 3:30pm.
2) The schedule combined with my own kids. It’s a vicious cycle. My kids fall asleep around 8/8:30pm. I need a good two hours to decompress meaning I fall asleep MAYBE at 10:30pm. I have to be awake by 5:15am to have enough time to exercise before work (see issue #1 above as to why I can’t workout in the afternoons). So I’m sleep deprived for most of the school year.
Other than those two things, no ill feelings here.

I am closing in on 30 years. Each year the kids get dumber and much more needy. I once gave a test and had all of the answers written on the board. Not a single kid passed. The idea that they are going to run this country someday is scarier than any movie I have ever seen.

If we are slipping in rankings, it is because others are doing better for themselves, not because the US is getting dumber. According to the United Nations, and the education component of their Human development index, education in the US has actually marginally improved over the last 30 years.
Whereas all of Europe and parts of Asia saw dramatic rises in education, the US was already at the top and highly developed in 1990, thus we have simply held our standard and not seen huge growth in the field.

Year 19 for me. Although this is year 7 as an administrator. My summers are only 1 month. I'm looking forward to a year closer to retirement. Going to try for 28 years total in education and 20 paying into trsl. Plan on retiring then going back to substitute teach for $250 a day.

Just the usual stuff that most teachers talk about, crazy parents, admin wasting your time on things that don't matter, etc.
I teach 7/8 grade so I get a lot of kids for two years in a row, and that can be great when there is a good class, but brutal when you get a class you don't like. My 2nd period class this year will be handful, I had them last year and they were the most arrogant group I've ever met. They weren't motivated to work, but were plenty bright enough to do great things. They just believed everything was beneath them and they were too good to have listen to anyone. Unless they matured over the summer, they will be a handful this year.
I'm actually excited to get back, the beginning of the year everything is fresh and people are optimistic for the new year. I'm teaching some stuff I haven't taught in years and some material I've never taught, so that is exciting to me.

I do find it strange.
My coworkers have all these random days and times to start their kid, like 1 pm on a Thursday. They meet the teachers and all that stuff.
I remember getting handed a pencil box then shoved on a bus. The parents never met the teachers until the teacher parent conferences. Or when you are a kindergartener going to the school for the first time ever.
I feel like it goes either two ways now, over bearing, or not giving a shite at all.
And I don’t think getting your kid on the bus is not caring, it just seems we weren’t babied as much and still made our way and respected the teachers.

Yeah from countries that absolutely dwarf our population and don’t do this nonsense of trying to get every kid in college. The world needs ditch diggers, but we import those too.

Totally understand. I coached in my early years, but quickly learned my time could be used better doing something else. With the long hours and the complaining parents, I gave up coaching after about 10 years and probably should have thrown in the towel even earlier.

Lol, I don’t have a month off from summer, and neither does any of the people maintaining services while you are off.
You could leave out the crying of having a month off and people wouldn’t say what they say about educators.
In short, your summer is just as long as everyone else’s.

Bogalusa has a 4 day school week now, with intervention on Fridays. I'm glad they're trying something different by bringing in the kids who need to most help on Fridays.
On the other hand, one of the teachers posted on FB Friday from the pool, telling everyone how much she loves her new schedule. I shouldn't care, but that level of tone deafness is unreal.
