As I enter my 18th year in the classroom, I find returning to the classroom more and more difficult each year. It's been my experience that not only are students coming to us lower academically each year, but they are less motivated to learn and much more aggressive and disrespectful.

Even with those challenges, my biggest problem is the lack of parental support. I can't tell you how many times I've contacted parents about a student's grade or behavior and it's like they are upset I interrupted their day. However, let me take their child's cell phone or vape and they are up in the front office in less than 30 minutes demanding those items be returned.

I guess I'm old schooled, but it blows my mind how parents have so little interest in their child's education. Our students return on Monday and I'm hoping for the best, but history tells me to be prepared for the worst.

Good luck to all of my fellow teachers and I truly hope you have the best year of your teaching career.

They're probably not looking forward to going back to work after having the summer off.

They’re probably not much different, you’re just aging and no longer so young and dumb.

You have 2 years from being fully vested in great insurance for retirement. So if you want to at 20 years, you can hang it up and go do something else.

I just left the profession. 6 years and I just couldn’t do it anymore. I love coaching but hated teaching, and coaching just became too much time with all my own kids. And if I didn’t coach, I surely didn’t want to be in a classroom. Within 3 weeks I found a job making more money. Crazy how underpaid the profession is.

If it makes you feel any better, it’s the same feeling we all get when we come back from a long vacation and realize we have to drive into work that Monday. The only difference is that vacation is only a week, were as your time off was 2 months.

The single ones use the month of August for their internal validation of serving a purpose outside of raising their own kids. September 1, they’re back to their whiting ways.

First fall not being a teacher since 2013…

My stress levels are way down, but I applaud those who fight the good fight.

Year 10. I look forward to the kids I get to connect with this year. The ones that send messages that I make them want to come to school or actually enjoy English class.

Back during the 1980’s, I had a favorite high school science teacher. I thought he was a cool guy. He was probably in his early 50’s. Many of the male students would laugh at him and make unruly comments while in class.

About 7 years later, I visited my former teacher after school. He told me how surprised he was that many of his former students came by and said hello.

I guess high school students go through that immature phase where they want attention and be that bad boy in class.
