i grew up super poor but had no idea. as a kid, you just accept what is and lack context that this isnt normal life.
food
- cheese toast (is this still a thing?)
my mom would put a slice of american cheese on a piece of bread and stick it in the oven until the cheese had burned spots on it
- rice/butter/sugar I just assumed this was what everyone had for dessert.
- red beans and rice for dinner every day and not the popeyes version
- powdered milk - and NOT carnation..couldn't afford that luxury; we got the Food-Town version. one time my dad busted my butt when we had splurged on real milk because he saw me downing a whole glass and he told me WATER IS TO QUENCH YOUR THIRST, NOT MILK!
- walking along highways looking for glass coke bottles to return for 5 cents and the occasional 'jackpot' when you found a 32oz bottle and could get 10 cents for it.
- clothes and shoes that didn't fit for sunday church. i still have PTSD from how miserable i was during those endless sermons and couldn't wait to get home and rip them off for a tshirt and shorts
- we were allowed to 'eat out' once a month after church and that was the place with 10 cent burgers.
- when we finally took a family vacation (i was like 10) it was to the ramada inn on the south side of monroe  i mean, they had a *POOL* so we thought we were at disneyworld.
- only argument my mom ever won with my dad was when he was FURIOUS at our 'waste' of toliet paper. he said we only needed TWO SQUARES
and this debate raged for a year until my mom finally won this one. (thanks mom)
- one time a friend got out of our car (1970 ford galaxie 500) and slammed the door and my dad was so mad i thought my life was over and my mom said 'what did you want him to do? throw his leg out the door and break it?' my dad replied 'bones will heal'
any good stories you baws got or did you all grow up with Jeeves bringing you tea & crumpets on the portico?

Most of my childhood was spent playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 on my original Xbox.
My grandparents do still enjoy cheese toast, though

Every Christmas Eve our dad would cut holes in our pant pockets just so we would have something to play with on Christmas morning.

Wasn’t poor but cheese toast was/is a staple

Milk toast, heated milk on the stove with some pepper sprinkled in. Poured over toast. We also had a reverse osmosis countertop filter. We had six, 5 gallon buckets we would fill up with the waste water and store in the bathroom to flush the toilet.

Friend,
We went to Piccadilly on some Sundays after church. Grandmother loved the one on Jefferson Highway (the real Jefferson that actually runs through Jefferson Parish), and wrote to save it. As you know, it was torn down and an unsightly gas station was put there (what happens to all those toxic gas stations once we are driving electric?).
Mother never liked Piccadilly and called it “the school cafeteria” and other degrading words. But I must take after Grandmother here because I think a Dilly roast beef with green beans, carrot soufflé, and a roll are worth the drive to Metairie now. It may be a cheap meal, but it is a delicious and hearty meal.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Why on earth would anyone take their tea on the portico…
Anyway, I don’t have any stories to compete, as even though I came from no money, my parents worked their asses off and sacrificed a ton so that my sibling and I didn’t really understand that until much later.

Cheese toast with a little hot sauce.
Also, don't forget the GOAT cinnamon toast and milk.
For "poor" activities, Lincoln logs were GOAT.

Living in a trailer and having the vents in the floor, would sit over it with a big sleep shirt wrapped around me in the mornings with the heater pumping before school.
