I like how everyone hates the big green eggs and Kamado Joe’s now since they’re such a PITA to use. My father in law just got rid of one too, switched out for a traeger

Please, please explain. Can’t wait to hear this.
There is no grill easier to use than a BGE. It’s self cleaning and holds a temp without the need for electronics. Your pellet grills needs cleaning and a computer to function. Now you tell me what’s more complicated?

I feel like there’s a trade off with longevity and flavor. Most of the bbq I’ve tried that was cooked on a pellet grill has been good but not as good as what comes off a kamado or offset smoker. Steaks, burgers and other cuts that are typically direct grilled are way better on a kamado.

I'm a BGE guy but a lot of the people I got on the train have gone to pellets or propane. From my experience though 90% of people use a grill/smoker/whatever until it gets caked with too much grease and starts to rust then they just go buy something new. BGE/Kamados definitely require some maintenance over time. Ive replaced my firebox and ring at least three times (all for free from bge) and I have a new handle and harness on it. I think a lot of people would have gone to the next deal at that point.

Currently have a pellet that I might end up selling once I get the kamado in or just use both. Already got rid on my propane grill last month due to using it only a few times in a year.

I have 2 Primo XLs that I have not used in years since getting a masterbuilt gravity smoker. The space on the 1050 and the fact I can just dial up a temp and go makes it stupid easy. It has its drawbacks but its like a pellet smoker that uses wood and charcoal for a better flavor. I wont get rid of my primos tho...just cant I just sent a email to my KJ MB rep to get a updated list and see how their shipping is now post covid.

More complex function? Yea a pellet grill
More of a PITA to use? The BGE style. And the PITA nature makes it less likely to get use

I don’t think anyone is arguing BGE/KJ are better for a high end finish - but the work involved to get that is not worth it compared to a solid pellet grill where it’s set and let it rip

You still haven’t explained the PITA part of a Kamado grill.

I have a BGE and have for a long while. I went through a period after I first got it and cooked on it the first few times where I didn't use it at all for years. I moved and built an outdoor kitchen where I had them build a spot into it for the Egg. Since then, I pretty much grill exclusively on my gas grill, but I smoke on the Egg a lot. 2 times a month or so. Chickens, Ribs, Pork Butt, Brisket, Beef Ribs, you name it. It is amazing at smoking, and grilling for that matter. I assume the PITA part is grilling on it though, because it takes some time to get it up to temp and stabilized, which to me, is not worth it for cooking burgers, steaks, pork chops, etc. I love my egg though. I use a BBQ Guru party Q to get it up to and control the temp. Stainless smoke stack regulator and kick ash basket help and are both musts in my opinion also.

The kick ash basket is a game changer. It’s cut my startup time in half. And I only need two little firestarters to get it going because airflow is so good.

I happened to be walking through lowes when the lady was marking the display one to $300. it now resides with me

No, all Kamado grills have a ceramic firebox at the bottom, with a heat diffuser that can be placed inbetween the fire and the meat.
Ceramic grills are incredibly insulated and (for the most part) self regulate. Air flow is controlled by 2 air vents at the top and bottom.

How are they a PTA to use? It's pretty simple set and forget.
I only have a KJ, and use it weekly and have been doing so for nearly 10 years now. The only "PITA" things would be cleaning the ash from the grill, but that's what a shop vac is for. I start my coals with a looflighter as well, so startup isn't a PITA either.
I can cook anything on that grill. Briskett, pork shoulder, pizza, steak fajitas, beef jerky. It's an outdoor oven.
