re: Who will be the number one pick in the MLB draft?

Because people largely don’t understand how the MLB draft works and assume it’s because Pittsburgh wants to be cheap

Right.
It seems to me, if they can pay a HS kid $7.2, then they can pay Crews higher than $8M.
It’s not like Washington is gonna pay him much higher than $9M if he goes #2.
I call BS on this “Pittsburgh is cheap” nonsense.

I will feel so bad for Pirates fans if the team is too cheap to take one of Skenes/Crews/Langford
It’s not about “cheap”.
All teams have an allotted amount of money to spend based on their draft position.
In this situation, a team is looking to pay their first round pick less, in order to pay their second, third and fourth round picks more. They are still going to spend the same total amount of money.

Well, what’s this narrative about Pittsburgh not wanting to pay Crews?
They drafted Termarr Johnson at #4 last year & he signed for $7,219,000 (the assigned value for #4 was $7,005,800).
In 2021 they took Henry Davis #1 for almost 2 million underslot.

Davis' agreement will pay him a $6.5 million signing bonus, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman. MLB's slot value for the No. 1 pick spot was a little over $8.4 million.

I know it won't be me. I have removed myself from the draft

So we will only look at what they did 2 years ago, instead of last year?
Let’s also not mention the fact that Henry Davis got injured 6 games in to his professional career so maybe he signed for less due to a medical issue…. similar to Kumar Rocker with Rangers/Mets?

Baseball is the only sport where #1 overall often isn’t the best player. It is who will accept the lowest salary.

Where did I say that? I have no idea what the Pirates will do. I was just showing that they have done this before, so it is pretty dumb to think this is an outlandish possibility.

They did this so they could draft guys and pay them overslot in later rounds, not because they're cheap.
The MLB draft is so complicated in part because the elite high school prospects have a lot more leverage than draft prospects in any other sport.

Can they trade out of the #1 slot? I would bet there is a club that would package picks and or players to get one of the top 3 picks.

I'm aware, just showing proof that they have utilized this strategy recently. Anybody dismissing it as a real possibility doesn't seem to understand the uniqueness of the MLB draft.

Pittsburgh is basically a farm team for other MLB teams! The owner is about making money not winning.

I’ll admit I don’t fully understand how the assigned values work for the MLB draft, but I assume you think Pittsburgh would offer Crews less than $9M?
His really, really good agent is gonna prevent him from going #1 for what, an extra $500k?
It could be up to $2 million more. Would you rather go #1 and sign for $7 million or go #3 and sign for $9 million?

The #1 pick isn’t signing for less than $8M, that’s a fact.

Even so, while this approach would make sense in some years this isn’t one of them.
Crews and especially Skenes are Big Leaguers in 2024 with immediate all star potential. Would be like Cincy passing on Burrow in favor of depth.

In 2021 the #1 overall pick signed for $6.5 million. That's the whole reason that people are speculating that Max Clark could go #1 over Crews, Skenes, and Langford. If Clark is willing to take $7 million, they are going to take him and spend that extra money later in the draft.

I’m aware. Just bc it happened then, doesn’t mean it will happen again.
