How does travelling for cancer treatment work?

I’ve been googling but I’m not really getting a lot of answers.
If someone needs to travel to say, MD Anderson for cancer treatment, where do they stay during their treatment if they’re not hospitalized but just going in every day for treatment?
Is that something insurance would cover? Or do you just air bnb and hope for the best?

I know a lot of large hospitals/centers have a sort of hotel for both patients and family members for extended stays.
Most will also usually have a relationship with several surrounding hotels for reduced rates.

I believe the hospital has a long term hotel (Residence Inn type of place) attached to the hospital.
For example, Ochsner has the Brent House next to it

Having stayed at Hotels nearby the Houston Medical Center before for business, that is where they stay. Hotels, AirBNB, etc. Unsure if Insurance would cover it, but there were a tremendous amount of patients in the hotels while I was there.

Just FYI, Anderson has living quarters for specific situations like yours. I know people who have done it.

Hospitals have extended stay places or partnerships with nearby hotels. The hospital will have people you can ask. This is very common for MDAndersen.
This is actually what the Ronald McDonald house does for kids.

This company offers up open seats on corporate flights for people needing to fly to certain areas for treatment. Definitely Houston area is a big participant:

Maybe a patient advocate at the hospital could answer that question. Being serious not sarcastic (this is the OT so I felt I should specify)

Look up Hope House - I stayed at the one next to Oschner for a few days after my treatments at Tulane. Free of charge, very good environment for treatment recovery.

What kind of cancer? I had family in the area so I just stayed with them but most people got hotels or long term rentals depending on what the treatment entailed. Some cancers have specific organizations that can assist with this, or your social worker/case manager at MD Anderson can also help.

MD Anderson has a hotel connected to it. It is a Marriot so you get points out of it. LINK
depending on what your insurance covers and how long you are going to be there, AIRbnb might be better. Hospital hostels still sorta feel like a hospital.

There is a hotel attached to md Anderson that makes it extremely easier to get to and from appointments or lab work etc.
there are others in the area but they aren’t attached to md Anderson
Rotary house hotel is the name of the hotel.

The Rotary House adjoins MD Anderson and is really nice but pricey. I believe it is owned by an entity related to MD Anderson. There is a Hilton nearby that is nice. There are plenty of ABNB’s but they are not cheap. I believe you can use an HSA account to pay for the expenses which would help on taxes. Also, check the non-profits specific to the condition, many offer travel grants.

I had a friend who rented an RV and drove to MD Anderson and stayed in the RV during treatment.

MD Anderson has a hotel on or very near campus from what I remember

I know at the Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville there are condos that can be rented also hotels near the hospital. Those that can afford go this route.
I would not be surprised if there is a program at Mayo to help families while going through chemo with living arrangements.

The hospital has people who help you find housing but there are programs in the area that help. Joeshouse.org has a lot of options to look at but MDA can help as well.
ETA that Joeshouse.org has options for more than just MDA but we have used it for Houston specifically. It’s very helpful.

Just be aware that traveling is rough when going through chemo. There are times my mom isn’t even sure she can ride in the car relatively short distances. Can’t imagine what an extended road trip would be like.

Back when I went there they had a hotel connected to the hospital.
I am sure it is bigger than it was 20 or more years ago.
I had impatient treatment.
Stayed in Houston when not in the hospital to see PA’s to adjust my meds and do blood almost daily M-F.
I had a cancer policy which gave me enough cash to buy a condo in the Belaire area.
Sold it for more money when my treatment was done at MD Anderson.
Some people stay at the apartments closer to Reliant stadium which some have buses to go to the medical center.
Some people just go and do their treatments at home. Just go back for appointments.
Some do their treatments there and go home to be monitored at the house.
