As of 2021, 25% of 40-year-olds in the United States had never been married. This was a significant increase from 20% in 2010, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of Census Bureau data.

Marriage has long been a central institution in the lives of Americans. In 1980, just 6% of 40-year-olds had never been married. But people born from the 1960s onward have been increasingly delaying marriage, and a growing share are forgoing it altogether.

The 2021 data marks a new milestone in that decadeslong trend.

While many unmarried 40-year-olds are living with a romantic partner, most are not. In 2022, 22% of never-married adults ages 40 to 44 were cohabiting.

The share of 40-year-olds in 2021 who had never married varied by the following demographic characteristics:

I don’t see the problem. If I could go it again I probably wouldn’t. But to be fair, if you make real good money and can get constant nookie all the time why get married.?????

It will continue to increase. American society has become one in which there’s really no benefit to marriage. In fact, it’s almost a detriment to both parties.

I don't know what percentage of the population qualifies as rich and good looking but it is way, way below 25%

Leonardo DiCarprio can do as he pleases, but most people need the economic synergies and social stability that comes with marriage.

These trends are troubling. Take a look at black communities where the institution of marriage virtually disappeared.

Divorce laws favor women. Change them to be more equitable and you'll see these stats change.

If you are 40 years old you were born in 1983. A lot of these men lived the movie Kramer vs Kramer. They've seen their fathers get ruined in a divorce. They've seen friends get ruined in a divorce. They want no part of it.

A majority of the divorces I know of are due to a cheating whore wife and the guy ends up struggling or ruined.

Would it have been the record high at 35 and 30 and 25? Why wasnt this reported then?

if they have never been married the share can only decrease over time.

I don't see the problem here. Seems like Men are smartening up. Divorce law, child custody law, etc. is extremely skewed towards Women. Why deal with all that when you can sit back and have a different dessert every week if you want?

Marriage isn’t for everyone, but especially self-centered narcissists… the incidence of which is higher than ever.

Watching older male family members get absolutely railroaded in divorce court plays a big part in this. Divorce courts are heavily slanted towards women and men know their lives can be absolutely ruined by a woman for no real reason whatsoever.
