When it’s all said and done, meaning enough time has passed, where will the Rock bands of the 90’s rank in music history? Are there bands that will carry on like the Stones & Beatles?

I liked a lot of rock in the 90s and many bands deserve ongoing notice. I think Nirvana still resonates, maybe Pearl Jam. Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins deserve to.

The one thing that might get in the way is that rock music's influence came from being larger than life and the 90s scene tried to make it small. Rap came in and stole their audience and have never given it back.

90’s music as a whole is consistently good, rarely terrible, but scarcely exceptional. While there are truly great songs from the 90’s, as there are from any decade, I just find the best of the 90’s don’t really stack up against the cream of the crop from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 2000’s.

Nothing will come close to 70s an 60s. I think it will be behind 80s and 00s and in front of 10s. The Bends and OK Computer by themselves is pretty fantastic. Beck's Odelay (by the way if you have a chance to see him live...go), PJ Harvey, Dinosaur Jr. lot of good stuff and like someone said, if you like rap you are in luck.

You mean bands that will keep playing into their 90s? Probably Foo Fighters and Metallica.

I loved a lot of bands that were popular in the 90s. But I hardly ever get the urge to listen to music from that era anymore.

It's still better than just about anything from the 21st century, though.

I think so..I think the 90s alternative rock work of:

Nirvana
Alice in chains
Smashing pumpkins
Nine inch nails
Pantera
Radiohead
Marilyn Manson
Korn
And more

Will still matter to people who find it.

Musically the 90's were a unique time. There was a lot of different things going on and pretty much all of it was a success.

I don't see Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters Green Day Smashing Pumpkins hanging it up anytime soon. And those bands still draw huge when they play.

RAtM, Korn and Tool are solid for the foreseeable future.

If I had to pick one that would be in the Stones longevity category it would be Pearl Jam. I could see those guys jamming into their 70's God willing.

Matchbox 20, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo Dolls, Hootie and the Blowfish…I loved 90’s rock. It was my childhood. Got a stack of CD’s laying around somewhere.

Watch the interview on Gene Simmons with Dan Rather on YT. They talk about this topic and Gene is making comparisons with music bands prior to the 80's and post 90's. First he asked Dan to name great bands from the 50s thru the 80s. He had no problem mentioning great bands.

Then Gene asked, name an iconic band from the 1990's-post and Dan had a hard time mentioning one. Then Dan asked, Nirvana?

My 15 year old and her friends all listen to 90s alternative. Not sure if that speaks to the longevity of the genre, but there's something about the music that resonates with angsty teenagers.

I still argue Tool is the Pink Floyd of my generation. They are rooted in the 90s.

I love Tool and am very indifferent to Pink Floyd.. but Pink Floyd is twice the band Tool ever will be.. go look at their numbers on their '94 stadium tour.. different times but that was still Pink Floyd without Roger Waters and they did those numbers.. I don't see any rock band ever selling out the Super Dome again

People are going to say the 60s, 70s, and 80s had better music, especially in rock, but at least IMO, my favorite decade of rock is the 90s. I'll be the first to admit that's because I grew up in the 90s so it's obviously a nostalgia factor to that. But had some terrific bands I still listen to religiously:

Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Tool
Pantera
Korn
Alice in Chains
Foo Fighters
Metallica
Stone Temple Pilots
Smashing Pumpkins
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Green Day
Rage Against the Machine
Weezer
Gin Blossoms
Blink 182
Oasis
Sublime
Goo Goo Dolls
Live
Bush
Staind
Godsmack
System of a Down
etc. (won't throw Disturbed or Linkin Park in here even though they formed in the 90s, they weren't big til the 00s)

90s also IMO had the best decade of one hit wonder songs too that I listen to all the time. There's too many too list though.
