this terribly written article doesn’t specifically say whether Nelson is being fired/replaced

The New Orleans Pelicans plan to restructure their player care and performance team after their injury-marred 2022-23 season, sources told The Times-Picayune. Aaron Nelson, the Pelicans vice president of player performance and care, has been in charge of that department for the last four seasons. Under Nelson, the Pelicans have finished seventh, 27th, 20th and seventh in games lost to injury, according to Man-Games Lost.

No shite. What kind of shitty reporting is this?

Good to see griff is willing to make changes.

Yeah, that was 99% background info most fans already know. Either CC is trying to subtly say he’s heard Nelson is getting fired, or he should have waited until he got actual information on the restructure.

Hard to blame the trainers for soft players that aren't dedicated to their craft. They don't want to play guys out of shape/unprepared and risk further injury. This goes higher than them, to the figure heads coddling the players and their fragile psyches. We have too many executives trying to be the player's friend..

They most likely can’t say until contracts have been signed/terminated. They’re probably announcing this because they know which moves will be made and they’ll announce when those moves have been finalized in contract

Even if we agree the players have been soft, you can’t sit there and say Nelson has done a great job. They’re going to do everything possible, including shaking up the medical staff before they concede on a player and trade them. That’s the last resort

We’ll see what they actually do. I won’t hold my breath

This is really the only possible meaning of the "restructuring."
Nelson got on the bad side of Zion and his "camp" in the first season, when he tried to reteach Zion how to walk and jump. I'm pretty sure that relationship never recovered. At this point, Griff has to make a change and try to find someone whom Zion will respect and listen to.

I agree completely that the Zion/Nelson relationship was irreparably damaged by Nelson in the first year. I just don't think it had anything to do with him trying to "reteach Zion how to walk." I think it had everything to do with Nelson holding him out an extra month before allowing him to begin his career and then the God forsaken "bursts" that caused Zion to have to sit at the end of close games.
I have my reservations about Zion after how this season ended. However, I am not going to crush him until a new training staff has the same results. I think Zion lost all faith in Nelson during his rookie year and he just wasn't going to listen. If Zion can't rehab seriously with a new training staff then I will be ready to move on.

Man, screw simply “restructuring” the player care/performance department.
A guy like Aaron Nelson bungling the first 4 years of Zion’s career should arguably be up for public execution.

Yeah it was pretty clear after the first year that zion did not like Nelson. Honestly surprised it took this long for restructuring.

So a rolling average of 15th in a 30 league team. Considering we have a guy in Zion that is still on the fence about having an nba career, it’s honestly not too bad.

I'm all for doing what's best for the long term future of the franchise so if that means getting rid of Nelson so be it. But the games missed stat is miss leading we did give the guy players like Zion, BI, Lonzo, and Larry. And looking at what happening with Lonzo the healthiest part of his career was here and we got a guy like Val who stays healthy. Both BI and Zion are notorious slow healers. BI want comeback tell he is a close to 100% as he can possible get and Zion is horrible at rehab, who ever the medical staff is they have to address those issues.

I have a feeling they're moving on from Nelson because his methods just wasn't effective on Williamson and he couldn't get him to buy into his methodology.
I don't think any change to the medical staff would affect any other players on the team. Ingram would still be Ingram and won't return until he's ready.
Zion clearly doesn't buy into the process and there enough of a sample size to say Nelson isn't getting through to Williamson and his camp.

quote:Yeah, Nelson's "bursts" frustrated Zion and Gentry. It was pretty ridiculous honestly. Where do they go now though? I know the Cavs have a good staff and the head of the staff worked under Griffin previously, but would he leave?

True. We have some of the worst conditioned players in the league.

I don't care if everyone gets replaced. I just believe that it starts at the top and we need to replace them all.
We keep trying this family type of organization, where everyone needs to be embraced and loved. It breeds weakness..

The two seasons we finished towards the top of the league in missed games were the two seasons Zion missed most of the season. In reality he's done a pretty good job with everyone else.
Even with Zion, Nelson identified a problem with his posture that would cause long term issues and attempted to adjust it. Zion didn't listen. When they followed they ramp up plan and played him on bursts no matter how frustrating it was that was the most basketball Zion has played without getting injured in his life. Then after almost a full season of ball his knee flares up again because that's what happens when you are overweight and have bad posture.
Zion also had a thumb injury that was supposed to sit him for a while but he came back almost immediately.
If Zion isn't doing what he needs to do to stay in shape and fix his posture issues then there is no way the best trainer in the league is going to sign off on him playing when he knows it's going to put his career in jeopardy. Saving players from themselves and extending careers is how Nelson built his reputation in PHX in the first place. These players need to take more accountability.
