Yes, and the texts of the debate in Congress were amazing:
'I promise that if we create this income tax it will NEVER exceed 2%.'

Another “Conservative” who has never bothered to read the Constitution.

16th Amendment was ratified.

Supposedly.

The "Progressive" amendments (16th-19th) have wrought tremendous damage to this nation.

If the poor got off the 1,000s of welfare programs we have (funded with our income tax) and go to work they wouldn't be poor.
The latest scam I found out about: P.T.S.D. You think it's for combat vets? Nope. It's for everybody. A woman I saw on TV gets $700 a month due to PTSD because her child was killed in a car accident. She's been getting the check for 9 years because the trauma prevents her from working.

National sales tax

Each state pays the federal government money for essential services that only a federal government can do(military, foreign affairs, etc)

How each state raises their portion to the federal government is up to their state legislatures. Florida revenue streams are vastly different than Alaska but Alaska cost of living is substantially higher than a Floridian’s. Florida could increase tourism taxes and Alaska tax oil, tourism, and fisheries more to pay their portion to the feds.

An income tax not only hinders productivity but disproportionately hurts wager earners in high COL areas.

Consumption taxes are the only fair taxes.

100% agreed.

But fair =/= legal.

Should, bud doesn't.

Why does a person who buys a vehicle outright and then pays the tax to buy it, have to continue to pay that tax once per year indefinitely?

Why does a person who buys a home or land, pay their tax on that home/land upon purchase but still have to pay a yearly property tax on something upon which they've already paid taxes?

Why are we taxed a significant portion of our gross income pre-pay, from state, federal, social security etc. but then the money that the government actually does let us keep, gets taxed again when we spend that money that has already been taxed?

The only answer is government bloat. These people who rule us refuse to work within a budget they can afford, so they must find a way to increase that budget- which is only possible through more unfair taxation.

Her case may or may not have merit, but why would “traumatic stress” be limited to combat stress?

Because we should have limits to stealing other people's money.
Everyone has stress. Therefore, everyone deserves money from govt. There is no bright line. At least military service is a bright line.

What pisses me off more than the first time they grab your taxes is when you make more money after paying your taxes and they screw you again. They take that seed money from you constantly.

It is the most unfair method of taxation.
It punishes capital rather than inviting it which is what America should embrace.

It becomes a political football used to divide us as. Democrats vilify wealth in exchange for promotion of reliance on government for assistance.

Consumption taxation is a far more equitable way to tax citizens. It allows for freedom to save and grow wealth while being conscious of consumption which leads to a more balanced lifestyle. Americans generally lean toward over consumption- from food to hard goods, Ed over consume.
A consumption tax would also lead to a smaller carbon footprint which the left holds so dear.

Unfortunately, we’re taxed on both income and consumption in America.

Imagine the power of this economic engine if only we allowed income to go untouched by greedy and I constrained government

My Grand Père told me this in one conversation a long time in the past that when they were asking for support of the income tax it was only going to be for those making millions of dollars each year.

They lied then just like they do now.
