Name a guitarist that is great...but is rarely mentioned when people talk of great guitarists.
My pick would be Mike Campbell - not a speed player, but his timing and solos are always spot on, and compliment the song. Together with Tom Petty, they made some fantastic music !
The solo at the end of Running Down a Dream is incredible!
Running Down a Dream 3:12 mark for solo

And I'm going to say..
Kurt Cobain was better than he let on. I know that may be strange to consider. He hid it so he wouldn't have to be pressured by it, you're just.. not that gifted in melody and can only play power chords.

Stephen Stills.
He was overshadowed by the vocal harmonies, songwriting, and overall greatness of each member of the groups he was in, and never recognized for the virtuoso guitar player that he is. If you have ever seen him live you know what I am talking about.
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin is another example, though not a "guitarist", he was probably the most overlooked musician in all of rock history. The guy was a master of anything he played but the shadow of Plant/Page/Bonham always kept him in the background.

A non metal band I don't hate. "Hi Infidelity" was a great album to me, the production on it also stands out. Everything is crisp and mixed perfectly for the time.
One of the bands my mom really got into, which I much preferred over that Bon Jovi shite that my lame arse 1st step dad brought to the table.
Eta
Coolest records he had were van halen, van halen II and Queen II. Out of about 30. Sad thing was, he had a badass home audio setup for the time. And it was all wasted on the likes of Bad medicine and pouring sugar on ourselves.
Anyways..point being, I can always make time for a little speedwagon

Absolutely agree about Mike Campbell.
I feel much the same way about Lindsey Buckingham being incredibly talented but never really recognized as a guitarist

Not sure if he counts because he does receive credit but Is say Ed King. Played with two other players but his writing of multiple guitar parts is what made skynard who they were and opened up space for the other players.
My other entry is Leo Nocentelli. Dude can rip it up in almost any style, although he spends most of his time blending in the mix. Such a tasteful player that adds value to every track he is on.
Mike Campbel is a good entry as well - I saw them play on JFest and Petty basically said the same thing along the lines of “I think he is just the best rock and roll guitarist there is”.
Steve Luthaker would definitely agree he is on this list, I probably would too.
