If jumping from 30 plus feet above the water off the top of an under construction tugboat from the roof of the wheel house on hot galvanized steel with muddy feet into a ~10 foot deep bayou counts as stupid, then guilty.
I guess the difference is we didn't do it on a parent sanctioned trip. We KNEW we were fricking up when we did it. Our parents would've beat our arse, and certainly wouldn't have put us in the position to do that sort of stuff willingly. Without the internet and social media they had no idea the dumbass stuff we were doing. Hell Panama City Beach as an 18 year old senior was a drunken orgy with absolutely no adult supervision.
Like this horrible tragedy, the same stuff happened in the '80s as well. It just didn't make national news and parents weren't involved in its planning and undertaking. Bottom line, in either case it would not have mattered. Growing up, by definition means youre not fully formed ability to reason is there to save your arse from yourself.
To make it clear, this is by no means an event in which a parent should be blamed. It is just a heartbreaking result from a moment of horrible lack of judgement.

It's happened forever. My uncles in the 1930's would climb the bridge over the Beaver River between Rochester and Brodgewater, PA and dive into the river for fun. Neighbors would knock on my grandmas door and she'd say "what do you want me to do, jump in after them?" Fortunately, they survived every dive but Uncle Donnie lost his life in WW2.

Statistically it would save some lives. We wear seat belts by law (granted they probably save more lives).

You do realize, these "boat employees" were raised on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean? I am willing it bet they have a LITTLE more experience piloting a boat than some Baton Rouge raised teenagers.
You and your nephew are confusing lack of common sense with being victimized. In the Bahamas, you can rent a 21'center console for a week by signing your name and giving them a credit card. Common sense says you would be a dumbass to do so if you had never operated a boat before. In their less-litigious society, they assume you have that common sense, and they are not legally obligated to confirm that you do. Or do not.

My grandfathers brother died while swimming across the Alcovy River in the 1930s. Grandpa said he was drunk on moonshine and did it on a dare. Got fatigued before he could get across and drowned. He was only 19.

I agree with you certainly, but to be fair if there were 100s of high school kids there should have been one dad there with boating experience and with that many dads from Louisiana a good chance one had a captains license.

Seriously. There is probably a small handful of people that could legally and safely operate this vessel in Baton Rouge and this guy is acting like just random chaperones are just going to be them because this is Louisiana

Does anybody remember two young Floridians who tried a trip from FL to the Bahamas maybe 5-7 years ago?
Did they ever find any trace of them? It was a big story.
I sure hope they find Cameron's body. I still find it hard to fathom him jumping off the boat.

In 2015 two kids from Jupiter went out in a smaller boat and got caught in a storm. They never were found. This might be what you are remembering. Their boat was found.
Kids were probably wealthy as they lived in the same neighborhood as Joe Namath in Jupiter.

Are you talking about the two 13 or 14 year olds that went missing? They found their boat weeks later but no bodies. They found one of the kid’s iPhone but the family of the kid that owned the phone didn’t want it unlocked by Apple. The other family tried to sue them to get it unlocked, in case the boys left a goodbye message.

This is the Mermentau River bridge near Lake Arthur. Know several that jumped off just to say they did it. Teenagers do dumb things. Feel horrible for the family.

We used to go jump off of the railroad tracks on Frenchtown road into pretty shallow water. I don't think we ever planned too much on what to do if a train came by either. I think a lot of us are just alive as adults due to luck.

There was an nfl player that went off boating off the west coast of Fl years ago. He had his boat flipped and they were out there I believe 24 -36 hours. Cannot remember his name. I believe they were able to sit on top of the hull

A good friend of mine lived right there by the tracks. We'd ride 3 wheelers back there all summer back to the "beach" on the river.
Drinking, 3 wheelers, rivers, teenagers. It's amazing that we didn't have more bad things happen than we did.

Eh my statement may have been dumb, but you have traveled enough to know that say what you want Americans may be fat and lazy but when the shite hits the fan in these types of situations there’s not many nationalities better then Americans at getting their shite together.
I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what the captain did.
I do know, I’ve been on those type boats in the states before and a quick safety protocol of where the life jackets and life savers are along with a decently trained crew and this kid is much more likely to be alive. He tragically jumped and we don’t know what happened after that. But I certainly don’t trust the average bahamian boat crew to save my life.
