Moral of the story do not take a senior trip out of the country
A bunch of us went to Last Island for ten days for our trip. Fished in the Gulf when it was calm and rode up and down the beach all day fishing the birds. Hit the flounders at night. We brought our beer by the pallet!

Good family. Sad scenario. Don't dive into water you can't see the bottom of.

Or, you know, don’t jump off a boat into the open ocean. Tragic bc teens think they are invincible and likely thought this wasn’t even that dangerous but he could have easily drowned doing the same thing in US waters.

I wonder if they went over safety procedures with everyone before setting sail. Surely so.
Airlines go over the safety procedures on every flight. I have never heard once that jumping out of the plane could be dangerous.

No, the moral of the story is don’t do dumb shite for attention

I agree with you certainly, but to be fair if there were 100s of high school kids there should have been one dad there with boating experience and with that many dads from Louisiana a good chance one had a captains license. Very sad situation for everyone. Still blows my mind a large boat like that wouldn’t have a better MOB procedure.
I don’t think you are looking at this realistically. There is a MOB by his own intent.
Are the boat crew supposed to call “ Is there a Captain in the house ? We have an emergency and we know y’all are from Louisiana so we need y’all to run this boat to pick him up. We live on an island and don’t know about boats like you city slickers.
All we know is not to jump off into the dark “

We went to Cancun on senior trip. I don't remember anything too bad happening. We definitely went on a booze cruise to some island. This was in the mid 90s though. No clue what it's like now

You are aware that the Bahamas are made up of islands, correct? Why would a dad from Louisiana have more experience driving a boat than the captain of this one?

Yeah, that’s not what I meant. I was just wondering if they went over what to do in emergency situations. Not that it probably would’ve helped in this situation. Just a horrible thing for the family to deal with.
You can’t stress to your kids enough, not to do dumb shite.

Also, any dad with a captains license would be absolutely trashed on a booze cruise.

They should’ve brought StaleKracker as backup

If teens are dumb enough to think that jumping off a booze cruise at night isn’t extremely dangerous, why are they smart enough to go on a booze vacation by themselves?
It’s a Darwin move.

Because owning an 18 foot flat boat auto qualifies you to be a captain in Louisiana

And one can’t imagine why kids this age can’t make adult decisions…. There has always been a ton of danger in the world. Previous generations of parents just accepted that one can only do the best they can to inform the children as they grow up about the world, and even then shite things will inevitably happen to a certain percentage. Death is a part of life, and too many in the modern world think they can somehow never experience it, so they can’t handle it when it does occur.

I had a friend of mine drown in high school. Throw in teenagers and booze and unfortunately sometimes bad things happen.
It's tragic for that family. My niece knew this kid.

A dad with experience with that type of boat?
In weather?
Who knows the waters?
Etc, etc, etc.
It's really dumb to think there would have been a passenger with anywhere the experience needed to navigate those waters on that craft.

Not to minimize the tragic situation, but this has turned into a peak OT baw thread.

Yes, it has. Let the downvotes rain for common sense people!
