Samsung comes with a couple of hundred pre-installed streaming channels.

I’ve had a 55” JVC for three years. No complaints, great picture.

Bought a 75" JVC that powered off after 6 months. Argued with JVC until the 12 month warranty expired. They kept saying they couldn't find a repairman near me... which is plausible as I'm in the middle of nowhere. Extended warranty kicked in and they sent me a new one. I went on ebay and bought the parts for the old one for $100 and fixed it in like 10 minutes, most of that time was removing and reattaching the screws that hold the back on.

The previous interface must be really bad since they just introduced it in 2021 and are already canning it.

They've been using the same os since 2014 (custom linux os, not android like all other tvs), and each year, on avg, they release to latest version. It's not backwards compatible for the same reasons you don't support Windows11 on a 2012 computer.

In other words, I don’t trust a single fricking thing that so called “experts” rank

Rtings.com has pretty objective ratings of just about every TV you can imagine, with a standardized testing, measurement, and scoring methodology. They include all of their test results (including pictures and/or graphs where applicable) and allow you to compare/sort based on whatever is important to you.

It’s the first place I would go if I was in the market for a new TV. Figure out price range then compare the results of various models to decide what you want. I find Rtings to be much more objective than 90% of the tech reviews you will find out there, particularly when it comes to TV’s.

My two cents:

Used to be, many panels were made by the same companies.

Some companies use better components ie caps that last way longer. I don't know if anything has changed in the last few years. I have an older Sony Bravia 52" I found on the side of the road. It's 7+ years old and is only just now starting to glitch some on start-up. 1080p is fine by me.

Generally cheaper is fine, but may not last as long. Sound can be an issue on cheaper sets as well. Sony, Samsung, and LG may have much better sound.

That’s still the case. Most if not all OLED panels for TV’s are manufactured by LG. So Sony, Samsung, etc OLED’s are using LG panels. Although I have read that other companies are in the process of jumping into the large OLED panel market.

There are quite a few manufacturers for regular LCD panels. But the key thing to know is that many of the big TV manufacturers still source panels from other companies depending on the specific model. So a given TV, even from one of the big names like Samsung, LG, or Sony, may have a panel from any number of companies including LG, Samsung, Sharp, TCL, AU Optronics etc.

That doesn’t mean two TV’s with the same panel are equal though. Especially for regular LCD (meaning non-OLED) displays. There’s a lot going on under the hood besides the panel itself. An edge-lit TV will perform nowhere near the level of a backlit TV with full array local dimming (FALD). Additionally, all of the software that handles conversion of the incoming video format into actual images displayed on the panel is proprietary to each TV manufacturer. That software has a lot to do with how a TV performs as well.

Eh, I think sound from pretty much all modern flat-panel TV’s is garbage. One thing that happens with high-end TV’s is that they tend to be thinner with smaller bezels, which means speakers are an afterthought. I have a pretty high end Samsung and its rear-firing built in speakers sound like complete dogshit. But I also don’t think buying a TV for sound makes sense anyway. Even if you don’t have a 5.1 setup, soundbars are cheap and will at least sound way better than the TV.

Over the years I have become convinced that some products are, in effect, generic. Gasoline and electronics are on that list. Eliminate the obvious imposters and everything else is price.

Agree. All 6 TV's I have are Samsung and have had great luck with them. Never buy a Samsung refrigerator, microwave etc because your just setting yourself up for a lot of aggravation.

I guess I lucked out, my Samsung fridge is 10 years old and hasn’t given us any problems yet.

On my second Samsung but thinking about trying another brand. Suggestions? 40-44in.

As long as I have a samsung phone I will always buy samsung TV's. I can cast from phone to tv without wifi and I can cast ESPN app as well. It has saved me with streaming at tailgates or anytime we have lost internet service for any reason. I could be wrong but I don't think you can do that with other brands. I definitely couldn't figure out how to cast from wife's iphone without wifi. And even with wifi I can't cast ESPN app from phone to tv.
