And then when the poor remain poor despite it all and the world's artistic legacy behind closed doors dispersed all over the world ?

You obviously didn’t grow up in New Orleans..

Awesome story… It’s great how you got to see your father as a completely different animal, in a good way…Pretty cool

My big brother worked the west bank side of the gondola. He rode it over to get to work and rode it back to get to his car. If he was the late shift he rode back with all the cash collected that day. Imagine trying that today, if there was still a gondola. I got to ride it all the time when he worked.

Saw the Cars and a couple others I can’t remember.

My dad got a speeding ticket on the way to the fair. That, and the Space Shuttle, are all that I remember.

Cool thread. I remember very little. Gondola , Sugar House and dancing to the pretenders.

I was 17, couldn't get into Sheila's or Jed's. Beer Garden it was. Loved Original Mürztaler Musikanten

Had a pass and went often. There was always someone coming to town who wanted to go. Most of it is a blur, but I remember going to a small bar in the Canadian area and watching Gordon Lightfoot put on a show.

Remember it well. Went twice for a couple of days each visit. Many fond memories.

That was a great year, all the best movies and music came out and going to the Fair was the biggest treat.

Those pics are pretty neat. Before I was even born yet I still yearn to return to the 80s. Being in NOLA today hard to believe it used to be prestigious enough to host events like this and be one of the greatest cities in America in prior centuries.

I was there. 9 years old. Rode the gondola over the river, thought it was big stuff. The steam engine and space shuttle were fascinating.

My grandparents took our and my uncle's family. My cousin was 2 and was being a little shite, as 2-year-olds are wont to do, but his mother wouldn't consent to him getting his arse whipped for it. My grandfather, who wasn't all that talkative, finally had his fill and tongue lashed my uncle, telling him that if he didn't whipping the boy's arse he would whip both of them. I laughed for days.

The space shuttle was pretty awesome. There was a pretty good arcade as well. Didn't a tight rope walker attempt to walk across the gondola and bailed halfway across? Or was that a separate event?

ETA here it is. Crazy stunt! Tightrope walk
