re: $15,000 for mini-split system?

Surprised mini splits are so uncommon still for installers. Seems like in larger metro areas a small guy could start a company specializing in them and do very well. It’s a very simple process for the most part.
I don’t think most are concerned with the installation, but instead any warranty work or maintenance calls. I think as they become more common in the “name brand” suppliers, people will start to utilize them more and more.

Seems expensive, but need to know specifics. I.e. location, electric feed, existing panel size…
Get a couple quotes then weigh them out.

$15k installation for a $2-3k unit is an insane profit/ labor mark up. So I’d be worried about the installation?
The biggest cost is the first install job. Once one has been installed, replacing it would be extremely easy. I personally wouldn’t worry too much about warranty work because of that reason.
But OP seriously, for $15 k you need to get quotes on adding a regular system with ducts even if it’s an exposed duct type of situation. I’m assuming it’s an older home with probably 8 ft ceilings and not much space?
You may also consider going with multiple smaller Mini splits? Similar to the window units one for each room or whatever.

I know I will have a whole system to replace in the near future and it will run $15,000 or so.
It shouldn't. What size system do you have ?

That’s an astronomically horrible quote. We installed a 2 ton one in the fall in about a 500 sqft sunroom for $4k

I just installed 2 this past weekend. One in my shop and one in an in-law unit. I paid $440 each for the 1 ton units and it took me a couple of hours to install. All you need is a vacuum pump and a set of manifold gauges.

I'm thinking about buying a Mr. Cool unit through Lowe's and working through Lowe's for installation. I'm waiting for an estimate for installation from Lowe's. Does anyone have experience working with a contractor through a big box store? Curious as to what the install estimate will be.

Me and a buddy installed a Mr Cool ductless 2 years ago and it took us a couple hours. I had an electrician come and run 220 to a disconnect panel. Nothing to it.

If you're buying the Mr. Cool DIY unit you do not need an installer if you know how to use an adjustable wrench. Yes, you can hire an electrician if you want, but you do not need an HVAC tech. Also, there's tons of local mini split installers advertising on FB marketplace in the Austin area. I would never use the big box stores to hire out installation, you don't have any control on who they choose. Vet your own contractor.

What's the name of your company? I am looking at replacing my 4 ton unit as soon as it quits any day now. I am about to start looking for quotes. In Hammond.

I recently installed a Mr. Cool, Cassette style 1.5 ton mini split on the parents back porch. It was very simple, came with instructions. Like others have said running 220V to the unit will probably be your biggest challenge if your not electrical savvy. I would research doing it yourself and save a lot of money...

Where are you guys buying these Mr. Cool's from?

I believe Mr. Cool units are re-badged GREE mini-splits, manufactured in China, maybe assembled in the USA (not sure on that), like just about all appliances nowadays.

Got this one from Lowes, with my military discount it was around $2k, with a additional 50ft line set.
