I’m confused as to why people care. She was at least half African. It’s not some huge stretch to have her played by a black person.

Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek like the other members of the Ptolemaic dynasty (not Egyptian). She may have also been of partial Persian ancestry.

So, yeah it's quite a stretch for her to be played by a black person.

Hell, they made Anne Boleyn black. Wonder what the reaction would be to having a white actor play MLK in a movie. Probably not good or accepting.

Because there has been a definite push for historians to accept a fake history placing blacks in prominent historical roles from European myth and history in order to create a fake history for blacks. This is being done incrementally and shows/movies are an important piece of that incrementalism.



When there is a question, such as Cleopatra, you err on the side of the predominance of the evidence you have. The vast majority of period-specific coins and busts of Cleopatra depict her with curly hair (the more Caucasoid variety), a hooked nose, and a jutting chin. This combination is predominant among Greeks and Persians (where the majority of her lineage speculation lies), not African.

If it's a piece about a historical figure proposing to be, in any way, a documentary piece on that person and/or their place in history, then it needs to be as accurate as possible.

People are confusing several issues - for clarification:

Ancient Egyptians, by their very nature, ran the entire range of skin hues, from very light, even fair-skinned (even some light eyes and hair colors) to very dark, what we would call today "Sub-Saharan", tones and everything in between. The Nile was one of those rare avenues of communication from North to the Northern part of Southern Africa and, therefore, allowed for a lot of this North-South exchange of culture, people, etc.

Once Egypt was largely ruled from the North (their royal inbreeding notwithstanding), we have a fairly good idea (from surviving artwork) of how they appeared, which looks to be a solid cross between traditional dwellers of the Levant (including Greek ancestry), other North African tribes and what we could call today "East African" in features, skin tone, etc. They would, however, in no significant way resemble those indigenous populations of West or South Africa, either today or then.

And the Ptolemys would have lightened up/"Europeanized" the royal blood line even more.
