Wonder how bad this is going to tank and how bad they're going to blame racists.

Cleopatra was provably light skinned, practically white, and they just decided to make her black because why not. Almost feels like they're goading people at this point. On top of this being a Jada Pinkett production, this just feels like all bait that's going to perform poorly.

I didn't even realize Netflix was doing a Cleopatra movie.

I'm holding out for the Denis Villeneuve movie based on Schiff's book (which I enjoyed).

No one knows, because no one knows where her mother and maternal grandmother are from. And where someone was from at that time did not equate to a specific racial identity.

This is not something anyone cared about or wrote about during her reign, so any arguments, like the one you're contributing, are stupid, modern speculation bullshite that don't really make sense for the world about which you're arguing.

And also, you don't have to watch it. This actress, whom you haven't named and is part of a project you've given us no information on, is giving you permission to help the show tank. Why does that make you mad?

I’m confused as to why people care. She was at least half African. It’s not some huge stretch to have her played by a black person.

half African for Egyptian rulers was usually closer to what we consider "white" today, genetically, than modern Egyptians

Like, we have done genetic testing and discovered this already.

Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek like the other members of the Ptolemaic dynasty (not Egyptian). She may have also been of partial Persian ancestry.

So, yeah it's quite a stretch for her to be played by a black person.

I’ve heard this before.

Kelly Sue DeConnick Laments The Abysmal State Of Comics After Telling People Not To Buy Her Books

John F. Trent September 20, 2021

Former Captain Marvel writer Kelly Sue DeConnick lamented the state of the comic book industry after previously telling people not to buy her books.

“And if you don’t like my politics, don’t buy my book.”

Yes, there's more!

Elizabeth Banks slammed after claiming men are less likely to watch Charlie's Angels because males 'don't go see women do action movies'

'Look, people have to buy tickets to this movie, too,' she said in her interview. 'This movie has to make money. If this movie doesn't make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men don't go see women do action movies.'

I think most people couldn’t ordinarily care less. I think it’s more the expected outrage if a historical figure, say Obama, was cast with a Caucasian actor.

We have a fairly good idea that her maternal grandmother was a Greek concubine and that her mother was Cleopatra V Tryphaena. Ptolemy Greeks tended to keep it in the family and hardly ever consorted with the peasant class of Egypt. If she had been a bastard it is almost certain that Octavian, her arch-nemesis, would have advertised it liberally considering his views on traditional marriage.

Hell, they made Anne Boleyn black. Wonder what the reaction would be to having a white actor play MLK in a movie. Probably not good or accepting.

Because there has been a definite push for historians to accept a fake history placing blacks in prominent historical roles from European myth and history in order to create a fake history for blacks. This is being done incrementally and shows/movies are an important piece of that incrementalism.

When there is a question, such as Cleopatra, you err on the side of the predominance of the evidence you have. The vast majority of period-specific coins and busts of Cleopatra depict her with curly hair (the more Caucasoid variety), a hooked nose, and a jutting chin. This combination is predominant among Greeks and Persians (where the majority of her lineage speculation lies), not African.

If it's a piece about a historical figure proposing to be, in any way, a documentary piece on that person and/or their place in history, then it needs to be as accurate as possible.

This...

...would be every bit as wrong as casting someone black as Cleopatra.

People are confusing several issues - for clarification:

Ancient Egyptians, by their very nature, ran the entire range of skin hues, from very light, even fair-skinned (even some light eyes and hair colors) to very dark, what we would call today "Sub-Saharan", tones and everything in between. The Nile was one of those rare avenues of communication from North to the Northern part of Southern Africa and, therefore, allowed for a lot of this North-South exchange of culture, people, etc.

Once Egypt was largely ruled from the North (their royal inbreeding notwithstanding), we have a fairly good idea (from surviving artwork) of how they appeared, which looks to be a solid cross between traditional dwellers of the Levant (including Greek ancestry), other North African tribes and what we could call today "East African" in features, skin tone, etc. They would, however, in no significant way resemble those indigenous populations of West or South Africa, either today or then.

And the Ptolemys would have lightened up/"Europeanized" the royal blood line even more.

Is this really the case? I've seen before that she was not white. At the very least, it's debatable, imo.
