One of my best memories is touring that museum with my now deceased stepdad who was a naval fighter pilot. Me and my family still talk about it 6 years later.
Bummer to hear it’s closed to the public.

My understanding is the restrictions on the museum are due to a mix of security + covid concerns as well as the high costs of gate and on-base security.
If Congress would increase funding to pay for it, it would be unrestricted. Politicians supportive of service museums because of their own military service have become pretty rare.
Stennis which has military as well as NASA presence moved it's museum outside the restricted zone. It's a far cry from the quality of the Naval Air Museum, but it's worth a stop if you are passing through south MS.

I live a couple of miles from the base and want to check it out. and the lighthouse. Maybe the restrictions will lift soon.

Well damn. I've been watching the rain in Navarre all morning. I definitely would have gone check it out in the next few days if I didn't just miss it

From what i hear, it's been tough on the museum as the number of visitors has obviously dropped way off.
They need to come up with a way of access.
Seems like an armed guard or two would be a much more cost-effective way of deterring the problem.

Looks the rain is done here in Navarre - at least for the moment.
Come back on the weekends it's open!

The US Army Aviation museum at Fort Rucker/Novsel is also worth the trip. Granted it's in the middle of BFE Daleville Alabama but it's not that far of a drive from Pensacola.

we just had one of those moments last time we went.
Wife's dad was army helicopter pilot in vietnam. Her grandfather/his dad trained pilots in WW2 and they have the plane he trained people in on display.

They need to open it up again full time. I was TDY at Pensacola in '74 and the museum at its present location was still under construction. Many of the aircraft were parked outside waiting to find their permanent home inside. They let us take a quick look inside and I knew it was going to be someplace special when they were done. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconusaflagsmiley.gif)

Yep, Sun is peaking out. Unfortunately, just here for a long weekend and I my schedule is jammed up the next few weeks. Though if this becomes a recurring thing, I’ll definitely keep an eye on it in the future.

I remember this being a great museum. Went as a kid decades ago, and still have some pictures. The country needs these museums more than ever as we watch "leading academics and historians" rewrite our history to fit the America-is-bad model.

I know the state senator from this area has been in talks with FDOT and NAS Pensacola about giving the roadway from the west gate to the musuem/lighthouse/ fort to the state so we can have access - NAS is requiring that there be secure fencing along the route- this is the hang up

What is frustrating is that it wasn't a civilian who did the shooting on base but a Saudi Military member who was there for DoD training.

Sounds about like all the stuff in DC only being open for 7 hours per day because of Covid. WTF? As if Covid only spreads when you're open longer than 7 hours. There are some real fricking idiots running this country.
ETA: couldn't they run buses from off base?

There was a time when that museum opened, that between my father and my uncle, they had flown or worked on every tail number in the museum, with the exception of a couple.

Growing up we went to Navarre twice a summer. We would ALWAYS visit this museum. So much fun. I’ve been probably 20 times and would go back right now.
