****UPDATE***
I just learned that NAS Pensacola will be fully open to civilians to visit that attractions area of the museum/lighthouse/graveyard etc by the end of May.
We will have to use the back gate entrance.
There will be a press release in the next few days
One of the Escambia County Commissioners was in the meeting I was in and confirmed the news too

Probably been mentioned but the Air Force armaments museum by the FWB airport isn’t as good but still a great free way to spend a few hours.
Also one day a month a bunch of former AC-130 crew members show up and give tours of the Spectre they have there which was extremely cool. On a normal day you can’t go inside it.

Well that sucks. I was able to go last summer with military family and we had the place to ourselves. Ok, its actually awesome. It is the best indoor activity in a 100 mile radius. I cant remember the last beach trip we took that did not include the NAS museum.
Best thing I saw last year. An actual SBD Dauntless dive bomber that was hangered at Pearl Harbor during the attack and later saw action in the Battle of Midway. Complete with metal patches where bullet holes were repaired. The pilot of the aircraft received the Navy Cross for his actions at Midway.
Even the scale model carriers in the lobby area grab my attention for a half hour.

Was just looking for this thread again since we just planned a beach trip. BIL can get us in but it said we all had to be in 1 car and that would be 3 car seats for baby and toddlers and 6 adults. No way we fit in the biggest SUV we have lol. Glad to see it will be open to the public now !

Yesterday we went to the museum, and to the top of the lighthouse. Also briefly hiked around Fort Barrancas. We had a great time. The museum is awesome. We didn't have enough time to do one of the flight sims but we will next time.
The Curtiss NC-4 was probably our favorite plane we saw in the museum, That thing is wild! Never seen anything like that.
The views from the lighthouse were magnificent. Beautiful day yesterday. If we had have stayed up there for like 20 more minutes we would have gotten a great view of the Angels returning home. The lighthouse was closing though, and they made us go back down. We did park and run to the top of the redoubt of Fort Barrancas to try and catch some action, but only saw glimpses of them descending to land.
A very enjoyable experience. Happy that they will start having it open daily for civilians.

Thanks for the update! The NAS is amazing.
The single most underrated part of a Gulf Shores/OB/Pensacola trip is take your boat or rent one on Blue Angel practice days (most Tuesdays and Wednesdays thru the summer) and post up on the large sand island across the intracoastal from the NAS. The Blue Angels basically run their entire show starting at 1030-11AM and from the top of that sand island they fly low enough for you to make out their faces. Hang out all morning and then head over to the nicely air-conditioned NAS museum.
I almost hate posting this as 10-12 years ago we had that place pretty much to ourselves on those days. Last year there were 75+ boats in the area. It helped (hurt?) that Hurricane Sally reshaped the shallow flats to make them more boater raft-up friendly.

Easy. It’s one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen. I’m also an aviation freak so I may be a tad biased

Will be in Pensacola Saturday with the family. Glad to see they're opening since I wanted to take the kids. Bummed to see real ID or a passport is required to enter. There's no way to get real ID in a couple of days right

Its a pain in the arse, but if you have social security card, birth certificate(with raised seal-not photocopy), and regular DL then you're good. That's what I had to do yesterday. And you gotta go through the West entrance. I imagine that kids just need just one of those, or none, but I am not sure. Might want to call them.
