To be clear, that was wrong then and it is wrong now.

Go to the traveling circus when it came to town.

Go shopping and be surrounded by well-dressed and well-mannered people, with an overriding sense of decorum.

Leave car doors unlocked, and not worry.

Get a gallon of milk right on your doorstep from the neighborhood milkman.

Never hear a word of profanity on radio or TV.

Bring my BB gun to the grocery store to buy BB’s. Actually carry the gun into the store when I was five or six.

To be fair though, we could still do a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread in the 80s and 90s.

friend of mine who passed away several years ago would tell me stories about growing up in the late 50’s. He would ride the city transit bus with his game bag vest, box of shells and his crack barrel shotgun. He’d take the bus to the last stop out of town, go hunting for rabbits and squirrel, and ride the bust back home with whatever he shot. Bus fares were a nickel.

You could do this in the 90s. I was stupidly driving after drinking in like 1996 and was pulled over. The cop told me to go home. No ticket, no DUI - nothing.

Or pull into the Esso, *ding, ding* and have someone run out to pump your gas, check your oil, and clean your windshield.

Same here. I even tripped getting out of the car. I was less than a mile from home so I’m guessing that’s why he let me go but who knows. 1996. What a year.

ETA: And it was a state trooper.
