I am not going to shite on this film. It seems that I remember many here being fans or perhaps I am confusing reviews I have read elsewhere.

I tried to finish this movie on at least 5 occasions. I finally finished by breaking it up over 2 days.

People seem to be infatuated (maybe a bad term) and I am wondering what the hell I missed. What do you like about this film. To me, it is not scary, suspenseful, or interesting.

I had to force myself to finish it thinking at some point there had to be something redeeming about it.

I liked it because it's creepy and different from your typical slasher or ghost on the property type movie.

It's ending (no spoilers) is kind of a nod to things that Aleister Crowley was supposedly messing with. There's a lot of different opinions on him, but he was an interesting person for sure.

What horror movies do you consider scary, suspenseful, and/or interesting?

Do you like any A24 movies?

I have yet to find an A24 movie that I didn't absolutely hate.

I'm more freaked out by demonic stuff and a young girl getting her head removed by a post than I am by blood and gore. It stuck with me for awhile, which doesn't normally happen with horror movies.

Edit: I realize a head being detached is gore, but it was done in a realistic and shocking way and not just for gore's sake.

The horror fanbase growing up seemed split between tongue-in-cheek stuff with some humor to it like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street and just pure sadism like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The modern horror fanbase seems to me more slanted toward the latter. Hereditary was a well acted, well made movie that just wallowed in misery, sadism and outright wickedness. It certainly provoked a lot of emotions in me while I was watching it, but they weren't welcome emotions or particularly interesting ones for me to experience. I would never bother watching it again and it seems the director enjoys that line of thinking, so I'll avoid him in the future.

Same here. It was also extremely well-acted. Toni Collette was phenomenal. I can understand why it isn't for everyone though. It's very much a slow burn, with the creep factor ramping up towards the end. Very similar to Rosemary's Baby in that regard. It's also as much of a dysfunctional family drama as it is a horror movie.

She should've been nominated for her performance, but I cannot recall the last time someone was nominated for a horror movie.

I thought it was kinda creepy cool but nothing outstanding. But I didn’t have a problem finishing it in one sitting but I was probably fricking around on my phone too.

For some reason I really like my horror movies to make me feel sad for a character. Until the last part of the movie I loved it. I still like it, but it was just silly enough to snap me out of that sad but still creeped out state.

These days I judge horror movies on originality because it’s hard to think of new ways to scare audiences. This movie was a refreshing one to me because it’s not the same old jump scare bullshite and it’s not a remake of someone else’s idea.

You're not alone. I watched it during covid at the board's recommendation and posted the folloiwng

Hereditary- total garbage. I really wish I had my 2 hours back on this one. Glacially slow pace, mostly boring, not really much happens throughout the whole movie. And the things that do happen aren't really 'scary'. Much like It follows we're never really given a backstory on the main premise, in this case that these milquetoast, whitebread, plain janes from the midwest are somehow channeling ancient demonic spirits to inhabit bodies and submit people to worship. Oh but wait, they have a book on it! That explains it Overall I just really didn't find this movie enjoyable in any way.

Arguably the horror genre is either black comedy (gratuitous sex and violence mostly) or tragedy. Hereditary is an unsettling tragedy.

I thought it was one of the best horror movies ever made but people who don't like the subgenre won't enjoy it any more than people who hate sex comedies would like Porky's

Great horror movie by the way. This and the Ring were movies that sort of stuck with you for a little while after watching.

I know none of you that hate this movie will watch but for those that are interested the amount of re3search and use of real historical beliefs on demonology in this movie are off the chart. This youtube video covers all the detail, down to the smallest points on how this movie nailed the subject. How Hereditary got it right

This is one of those movies that it actually helps that you see the trailer because the trailer had you believe it was going one way and then quarter of the way through it pulls the rug on you

*Spoilers*

I sat next to a buddy of mine who lost a brother to suicide earlier in his life and when Charlie’s death scene happened and Toni Collete was screaming in agony, he literally got up and had to walk out of the theatre to catch his breathe. I’ve never heard a theatre go silent after a scene like it did that night.

That being said I understand that Hereditary isn’t for everyone. I was just in shock by what I saw that night and I think a lot of that had to do with me not watching any trailers for the movie or reading up on it. I just went into it blind and got my mind blown.
