It says on the Denham Springs High app that school is closed tomorrow due to staff absences. Strike?
Posted on 3/29/23 at 6:06 pm to Rick9Plus
Protest, not sure if they are striking
Posted on 3/29/23 at 6:09 pm to Roaad
They just quietly put it on the app but no robocall or anything yet, like they always do when school is out.

Well that's bullshite. I'd be pissed if somebody required me to work extra hours for no pay.

Who did you think worked the admission gates, concession stands, monitored the students in the crowd? What about school dances? Who chaperones? Who helps to plan it, secure a location, photographer, DJ, decorations?

A lot of that is helped out by parent volunteers. But, if teachers are required to work these events they should be compensated somehow.

Why would you not give them raises?
because teachers whine and complain too much about their job...

All in all, it sound like the teachers should be more angry at the school system for taking advantage of them. But also, trying to be vindictive to the tax paying public, who ultimately control your purse strings is never a winning strategy and could backfire spectacularly.
You nailed it.

In the Suburban Houston districts they don't require teachers to work extra without extra pay and next year they will start teachers at 75k.
I don't know why anyone graduating in education would stay in Louisiana. Especially with the prevailing opinions about teachers expressed on this board. Stay last Louisiana!

Superintendent and teachers with the “flu” appear to be proving this.

Maybe they have it to easy. IDK.

I figured they were getting paid for it.

I am shocked the people of Livingston parish don’t care about education
There are many studies out there showing that more money doesn’t equal greater success.

What houston area district starts at $75k?
Posted on 3/29/23 at 8:44 pm to toosleaux
Those teachers were bitching all day on Sunday.

Per Pupil spending yes I agree with but when your best teachers leave districts and are clearing after taxes 800-900 more a month doing the same job it’s pretty hard to stay up top.

They still deserve to be compensated. And when you have been a high performing district your community should embrace that. And this tax would have done that for them.

1. Parent Conferences will only be held with our teachers, during their contracted work hours and during their unencumbered worktime, to the best of our ability.
2. All principals will have the discretion to discontinue any non-essential club or activity that takes place outside the sponsor's contracted work period for which they are not being compensated for the remainder of the school year.
For the remainder of this year, no employee shall be required to work at these events, unless it is voluntary or that employee is compensated at the discretion of the principal. We can revisit this item during the course of the summer and into the beginning of the next school year. Employees may be compensated by the school, or the school could ask for parent volunteers to perform those duties.
It’s still pretty amazing that this the Superintendent’s reaction for end of this current school. The tax and planned funding of pay increases weren’t going to start until the next school year anyway.
Being a bitch or admitting budget blown already with just over 2 months left in current school year. Also, the stuff mentioned was either usually paid for or allowed under teacher contracts; or he is admitting to pushing teachers to work outside of contract with pay and setting district up for lawsuits.
Regardless he is now doing more to make it harder to bring in teachers than keeping status quo is. Horrible leadership.
