I’m sorry, you guys are only in session for 60 days. And while I realize that you have to deal with your constituents BS year round, that’s just part of the job. If you can’t “afford” to be a legislator then don’t. Problem solved.

Right. But it is silly to pretend that money isn't part of the equation.
Everyone wants there to be less lawyers/public sector/professional activist types in the legislature. Well, pulling normal professionals away from their salaries is going to require paying them enough to justify leaving their jobs for two/three months a year.

Say it with me:
Politics should not be a career.
Politics should not be a career.

Which leaves us with retired people, wealthy lawyers, and professional activists who have never had a real job filling out the legislature....

They also get a $160 per diem. That would raise total compensation to between $30,000 and $44,000 for a 3-6 month part time job. Not OT rich money, but not a bad side gig along with all of the “free” stuff they probably get from lobbyists. Also, the ones who represent me were very wealthy before they ran. I’m sure they knew the low pay beforehand, yet they still ran for the position. I wonder what attracted them to want such a low paying job?

no doubt but, let's not pretend they spend all of that money to land the job because of the salary.

State legislators in Texas make $600 per month, or $7,200 per year, plus a per diem of $221 for every day the Legislature is in session (also including any special sessions). That adds up to $38,140 a year for a regular session (140 days)

Come on, man. How can you think we don’t need more people like Karen Peterson, John Alario, Francis Thompson, Regina Barrow, Royce Duplessis and Cleo Fields in the Legislature.

Such small salaries. Tell me again how our career politicians all become multi-millionaires by the time they leave office?

Of course not. I don't think pay increases will accomplish the goal alone, but I think it is part of it.

and for 60 days eat like kings on the tax payers' dime?

The salary aint the reason you dont have better candidates or a more diverse legislature. This is a money grab plain and simple under the guise of making office more accessible. Don't be stupid.

Safe to say that no politician leaves office poorer than when he/she/it/they/them/whatever entered. Many use political connections to enhance their regular jobs. One big plaintiff atty, on the Insurance committee in the Senate, would regularly request stats on which highways had the most accidents. He would then turn around, in the many lawsuits he filed against the State & ask for punitive damages because the State was "negligent" in not fixing highways it knew was dangerous.

Maybe if they would pass legislation to get our state out of last place in almost every important category I would be willing to consider paying them more. And if the Texas pay that was posted earlier is accurate, considering the condition of their state, our legislators or grossly overpaid in comparison.

performance based salary? I like it.
Posted on 3/22/23 at 10:41 am to ragincajun03
Serious adults know that this needs to be passed. When people aren’t decently compensated for their time and effort, bad things multiply.
Posted on 3/22/23 at 10:41 am to ragincajun03
I want to pay these people less, not more. If you don’t like the paltry pay, pick another side hustle. Many of them see a financial benefit in their main job due to their elected official status.

No. They’re public servants. They should get no pay, only compensation for their incurred expenses, with limits.

Normal Joes could never be a state legislator and hold a real job.
