Family trip (wife, two teen daughters (no pics)). Seasoned travelers.

Looking for thoughts on allocation of days. Initial thoughts are:

Berlin 5 nights (Including late night arrival so really 4)
Prague 5 nights
Vienna 4 nights
Budapest 5 nights

Planning day trip Dresden on way to Prague, Cesky krumlov day trip where in Prague, and Bratislava day trip in Vienna. Also open to other ideas.

I’ve done a few of those and I think that’s a good allocation of days that allows for seeing things and taking it easy when you need a rest. I spent 7 nights in Prague, which was a bit much. 3 nights in Budapest which could’ve been longer.

Looks like a good allocation of time. Its possible you don't need as long in Berlin but I think that's a good distribution.

Awesome, appreciate the feedback.

Anyone have any favorite places to stay? We try to either get two rooms ("family") or a one/two bedroom set up as it becomes WWII with two teenagers in a confined space lol

Budget is flexible - airfare to Berlin and out of Budapest was covered by points.

I try to keep around 300 a night for hotel but has some flex

If you're OK with AirBnBs, they're so much better than over there (no ridiculous fees added on). In Prague, we had an amazing 2BR apartment just below Prague Castle for ~$60USD/nt. Same with Budapest, great place just down from the Chain bridge below the castle.

Faust Wine Cellar in Budapest is a great stop, FYI.

Speckle - do you remember the names of the Air BNB places? Thanks so much!

For Vienna, I would recommend staying in the ring (Innere Stadt). We stayed at the Vienna Marriott across from Stadtpark. There is a tram right outside the door and its just a few blocks from the subway. If you are in or near the ring, you are within walking distance to most of the major sites like the Hofburg, St Stephen's Cathedral, museums, restaurants galore, Vienna Opera house, etc. We drove from Vienna to Cesky Krumlov, it was a nice drive but a bit further than the drive from Prague.

Obligatory pics:

I was going to recommend taking the train from Berlin to Prague but it looks like you already are.

There is enough in Berlin to keep you occupied but if you have time I would recommend visiting Potsdam for a few hours. Only a short train journey and very different feel to Berlin.

Cesky Krumlov is cool but be prepared for a long day.

Berlin and Prague are both great. Not been to the other two.

It's a cool little town. We mainly went to see the Einstein Tower observatory.

I recommend the Prenzlauer Berg area of Berlin for AirBnBs. Our friends and my wife and I stayed there back in 2018. Friends had a large place for a good price. Our place was smaller (just for 2).

I'd spend a day or two in vienna. Super overrated. Prague/budapest was awesome. Bratislava's capital was worth a day trip. And Poland was incredible...highly recommend if you can make it

Can't seem to find the one for Prague, but the one in Budapest is "Private Spa, Art-Bridge&Castle!" However that one is a studio and probably wouldn't fit your need. Lots of options though.

Consider a day trip out of Prague to Kutna Hora. Easy and cheap 45 minute train ride from Prague. Was our favorite trip out of Prague. Better than Cesky Krumlov and much less toured. Beautiful cathedral and a “bone church” that is amazing. Great walking town.

We spent several nights in Vienna a few years ago. It was okay but it isn’t a place I would plan to go to again. The best activity on that trip was a day trip on a large hydrofoil boat down the Danube River to Bratislava which was worth seeing for several hours.

Been to all of those destinations several times. Not sure of your interests, how much flexibility you have or want etc. So, just my $.02 in retrospect and considering this time.

Was in Berlin last December. It was interesting saying I'd been there. Getting to see sites like Brandenburg Gate. Checkpoint Charlie. Toured Potsdam.

Same with Vienna. During Christmas market time. Really neat town.

Been to Budapest 3 times and Prague twice, including last December, with a 3 day side trip to Ceský Krumlov an a week in Poland (Krakow, visited Auschwitz, then Warsaw)

SO...

And this is out of the box and not what you really asked for, but...

In retrospect, if I had it to do all over again, and thinking about all these amazing cities, I'd spend the bulk of it in Czechia, then do trips if you can to Hungary, and certainly Poland if you could squeeze it in.

Prague is the most amazing city to me in the World. You'd want at least 3 days there minimum. Ceský Krumlov was a bucket list trip and I wish we'd spent more time in this fairytale like city. I'd rank Budapest up there are well, maybe a Top 5 best place in the world that I've seen.

Attaching some links to pictures from these trips.

Keep us posted.

Budapest

Czechia

Poland

Auschwitz

Why not VRBO instead of hotels

I recently stayed in Berlin and I would recommend the Hilton Berlin. It was a nice hotel with a very central location, a lot of the major landmarks and activities are within walking distance.

Totally agree with Speckle on this. Also, wife and I did a few nights in a B&B in Belgium and it was fantastic and very affordable. B&B may not be and option with kids in tow.
