Which realistic moves, besides firing DA/Carmichael, could get you excited for the Saints?

Title says it all, but what REALISTIC (ie: not trading for Joe Burrow) moves that the Saints could make, would make you excited for the season?

With the caveat in the title being: Dennis Allen is still the HC, Pete Carmichael is still the OC (and there are no major Front Office changes).

I want the team to start to reset/rebuild, but not like "actively tank" (not realistic). Here's what that looks like for me (sort of timeline order):

-Do what you have to do to get cap compliant, but with as little can kicking as possible. There has to be some - no way around it - but do it smartly with players that can hang around for the rebuild

-Do whatever we can to acquire MORE draft picks. Trade down out of round 1. Trade any mid+ value players that we can (seems unlikely based on contract situations, but possible). Fill the roster out with young players on fresh, not bloated or restructured contracts

-Draft 2 QBs every year (1 in first 3 rounds, 1 in 4-7th rounds) until we have a franchise QB. NO FA signing QBs other than very cheap vets.

-Play young players as much as possible next season. They'll take their lumps, but it's how they grow. May result in more losses, which isn't totally bad. (Team will not actively tank - not a thing in the NFL)

-Most likely move on from entire coaching staff next offseason. Next coaching staff comes in with hopefully a top 12 draft pick and an extra 2nd, plus a healing cap

-Maintain focus on young players through 2024 and 2025 seasons. Do not sign massive FAs. Get to a clean salary cap situation and hopefully have a good group of young core players.

-Start to aim to compete in 2025/2026

Acquire picks and draft young talent. Replace entire coaching staff next season. Update uniforms signaling a new era. Payton Brees era is over let’s start the rebuild.

This is what should happen, hell should have happened 2 years ago.

Most saints fans don't have the stomach for this unfortunately, they are too short sighted.

I doubt management has much of a stomach for it either because they're used to selling out the dome. But they should know all those fair weather fans giving up their season tickets won't last long. Theirs plenty of people ready to get season tickets and those fair weather fans will be crawling back in a few season. Pretending they never left.

Trade the current roster away, then trade or land a franchise QB you then build a roster around slowly.

Anyone not on a cheap 1st contract or Saints friendly deal bye Felicia. Thank you for your service. If you don't have the QB you want in the draft keep trading back to backload as many draft picks as possible.

Make Ireland the GM and fire Loomis (probably not realistic). Give Khai a promotion as well.

Stop the can kicking bullshite. Take it on the chin and get yourself in a position to turn over the roster.

When we’ve shed the dead weight can the coaching staff.

Bring in a younger offensive mind and sell out to get him a qb.

Build your roster with the cap space you’ve created around the qb on a rookie deal.

We need to get our house in order and get a qb. Being a fringe playoff team or even making the playoffs does not mean shite until that happens.

It all starts with accepting the pile of cans we've kicked down the road and getting a clean start

Pretty much all of this. Gayle won’t fire Loomis but I think there’s a scenario where Loomis is promoted out of GM and goes higher and the position is given to Ireland.

Firing DA is still number 1 for me. Bringing in Callahan or Steichen next season (unless they’re hired this cycle) and pairing them with Williams or Maye would get me excited again.

Unfortunately everyone just wants something different.

A lot of people want us to tank
A lot of people want us to try to compete
A lot of people just want us to fail in general

next year will basically be a complete dumpster fire and there's no getting around it. The thing that's working against the tank is our division is so piss poor we'll end up winning a few more than we should and knock ourselves out of the top 3.

Yep. Also, the roster isn’t stellar but it’s not totally barren like some teams. Plus, DA really isn’t bad as a DC. I expect the defense to be a little worse, but still above average. It will be hard to get a top 5 pick like that. I think we’ll probably win 5-7 games if nothing major changes.

Lot of it just depends on who the other shitty teams are. Hopefully the ones drafting high will already have a recently picked a qb.

What's this board's obsession with this dude? He's like 30-years-old, stayed in NCAA like 10 years before he developed into something meaningful, he has injury history. He'll be 40 by the time he ever does anything in NFL looking at how he matures.

Hard pass. If he's there in a later round sure, take a chance. Otherwise, no.

This right here, I felt it. People on here trying to figure out how we can get Derek Carr or sign this person. Man, we gonna suck, let’s just suck and get out of cap hell and get a top 5 pick.

This is the way!!!
I fully expected a two year dip after the Drew/Sean era ended. I’m onboard and excited about a 2-3 year reset to make the team competitive in the long term.
What I am not okay with his delusions that we can make quick fix moves (ie free agent qb, firing DA now, or thinking a 1st rd player will transform the team). I sort of bought into that narrative last year thinking a Matthieu, J Landry, and 1st rd WR could put us in top 4 in the NFC. I won’t buy it anymore. Every move needs to be made w a 3 year future in mind.

I agree with this, but it's more complicated than that. Unfortunately we have to kick some more cans just to get compliant. Really, the important part is that they plan in the long term. It's likely going to take until 2025 or so before we can actually start to have no damage on the cap anymore. They just need to decide to commit to doing that in advance and try to plan the cap as best they can.

I actually feel confident that's what they're doing based on Mickey's comments recently. They want to repair the cap. They just need to map the dead money and cap hits for guys a few years out and try to make it work.

This is problem #1. They actively put dummy years into contracts they don't even have to. I'd bet they have dummy years on 80% of the contracts.

There is no need to do that right now.
