How do you feel about antidepressants?

What is the OT’s general take on antidepressants? Do you think they are effective, or cause more harm than good in the long run? Are they over-prescribed?
I’ll be honest, I’ve been taking antidepressants since I was in high school. Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, Effexor… I’ve been through a lot of them. Right now I’m on Effexor but am weaning myself off with the supervision of my doc. It’s causing more negative issues than positive, and I’m just done with them. You just become numb in more than one way.
Anyone else have experience with antidepressants you would like to share?

I was deeply skeptical when I was first diagnosed with GAD and prescribed SSRI's a few years ago. I had never been on pills regularly for anything, much less wanting to take "happy pills". I can honestly say I am glad I did follow my doctor's advice, because they do help me.

I have no personal experience and don't doubt they're needed and very effective for some/many.
But I am constantly surprised by the number of people in my orbit on meds, and given that anecdotal experience combined with the reality that I don't think our society is getting mentally stronger or healthier overall, I have to think they're at minimum over prescribed and that our mental health profession is often self-defeating.

You have to do what you have to do. Anxiety/depression isn’t something “you just deal with”.

My personal opinion is that they are likely over prescribed and are a shitty bandaid to a larger problem, where people are ignoring the issues in their life causing them depression and instead taking a pill. But idk shite about it and they seem to help my mom / dad

I get pretty down about ‘em

I'm sure they really help some but they are probably way overperscribed. I'd rather not take something that alters my brain chemistry unless I felt like I had to.

When needed, it's a miracle, but when it's not needed or not needed anymore, it does exactly how you describe it. I had a bad few years and effexor made me feel like myself again but I could tell when I didn't need it anymore. Drank way too much just to feel anything at all

I drink and fight my sadness away like every red-blooded American male before me.

I felt pretty sad at first, then I took some…I feel pretty happy about them now.

After I pop a few I feel pretty good about them

Some a-hole at work stole all of mine.
I hope they're happy.

I never really found they did anything for me. I found changing my overall lifestyle is what really helped. Exercise more, eat healthier, cut back on drinking and weed (this was the real big one). Once I did that I noticed my bad anxiety was practically gone. Felt better mentally and physically and found I didn’t need to take pills to help me.
