I started with a company about 1.5 years ago and I signed a three year agreement with them to go to class and receive a certification. I am now making less than half of my colleagues at other companies and I am tired of fighting to ask for raises to get me to a competitive hourly price range as others. What leg do I have to stand on as far as voiding a contract agreement? If it improves my quality of life and is a 100% pay increase can I leave for another company and not have repercussions?

Are your colleagues also having their certification class paid for right now?

First go to company and show how your salary is X amount below the regional average. If you like the company, explain you plan to stay if you have a competitive salary, but will certainly need to seek other employment if not.

Before they paid for your certification, you were worth less most likely. They invested in your training in exchange for a 3 year commitment.

Worst case scenario you would be expected to repay the cost of your training, depending on the contract, at a pro-rated rate. Most likely they don't pursue the money if you refuse, but you'll get a "Would not rehire" type of evaluation.

Had this happen to a guy I worked with and he ended up quitting and had to repay much of his training costs I believe.

What is your profession or job title and where do you live ? I'll pull the Bureau of Labor Statistics and comparable salaries (annual & hourly) to see if you're in the ballpark pay scale ranges. Having only been with your current employer for 1.5 years, you're only in the 10th percentile of workers in a given profession.

You gotta compare apples vs. apples which is why others have questioned your employer paying for certification classes and continuing education.

This is all most likely laid out clearly in the contract you signed. For my employer, if you break the agreement, you must pay back a percentage of the company's costs.

You could always call their bluff and bolt. If it's only a few thousand, I doubt they go after you for it.

Sounds like the training you received was initially considered part of the compensation package, hence the 3 year gig.

Now, to act like your contract was negotiated after you were trained and with no investment by the company seems pretty disingenuous. But what do I know?
