If you owned a seasonal business, what would you do on the side in the slow months?

Go time for my business basically is mid March through mid November. Between then it's largely crickets.

Thought about becoming a tax preparer for H&R Block or whoever but then changed my mind. Now thinking about spending about 3,000 on a souped up Rug Doctor and cleaning carpets.

Any other red hot suggestions?

Well if you're willing to do rug doctor type of manual labor then power washing is pretty similar

Maybe you could set up a combo business with the 2

Why not do one of those closet renovation businesses? I guess it’s just like mild carpentry but you go in and make their closets better. I’ve seen people do it to their attics before which is pretty cool

Power washing from December-February sounds miserable

Do you need to work? What’s you business? Honestly man I wouldn’t suggest something completely different as far as a working for yourself. For example carpet cleaning is going to be tough to do seasonally, the bread and butter is bigger clients you clean routinely. If someone calls you and you aren’t available for 7 months that’s gonna be a hard sell.

I know fishing guides that would go work in ski towns during the winter.

But I’d personally try to work on expanding your seasonal business and growing it into the off season into something somewhat related.

With this schedule, I’d do a lot more hunting.

So you're busy for 2/3's of the year. Then you get off right before Thanksgiving. Then get to enjoy Christmas, New Years, Mardi Gras, and then start ramping up again?

Doesn't sound bad to me.

My busy season is Mid-January to Mid-April. Bet you can't figure out what I do.

A friend of mine sells fireworks out of a tent in a small town. I was shocked when he told me what he makes. It's big money for a few weeks of work a year.

Yeah that's the thing, all of those you could easily find something related. Pressure washing for example, offer to all your pool customers or landscapers to pressure wash in the off season.

Or Christmas lights. Or some sort of winter landscaping like stump grinding that isn't seasonal.

Diversifying always sounds awesome, but like I said its going to take a lot of work just to start your book of business if they customer base is not related.
