here's nothing inherently ridiculous about an NFL team there.

Secaucus, NJ has two NFL teams,

Seems inevitable.
Maybe St. Louis recruits the Saints.

Secaucus, NJ has two NFL teams, and I'm sure people from Manhattan laughed at that idea when it was first floated.
Why would they have? At the time the Meadowlands was first proposed, both the Giants and Jets played in the Bronx and Queens respectively. Secaucus is also relatively close to Manhattan.

It’s all a contiguous population center. You don’t have to go through sparsely populated woods and swamps to get there

Since the State owns the Superdome we should have the National Guard unbolt it and ship it to Bunkie.
There is plenty of land there for parking and tailgating.

I suspect the majority of Jets fans and the majority of Saints fans already drive >40 miles

As if this is a pejorative. It’s like how they label people climate change “deniers”

i suspect the majority of jets fans don't drive to games at all and just lol at saints fans. you think most saints fans are coming from the northshore or baton rouge? no chance

A lot take the train too. No parking and about a 30 minute ride.

I live in NOLA and it is a shithole right now. There is no excuse for it and Latoya will keep it a sinking ship.
Saying that there is no chance that either team moves anytime soon is not being an apologist, it is reality. Neither team is moving anytime soon. Gayle Benson is alive and well, there are long term leases.
On top of that, there aren't many viable alternatives. With the specter of LA gone, there aren't many markets for an NFL team to move to that are viable, and the league wants a Gulf Coast presence.
Its the worst kept secret in the NBA that Las Vegas and Seattle are getting expansion franchises within the next decade. Once that happens, where are the Pels going to move to. There's also been pretty extensive discussions about a new Arena for the Pels in the new Convention Center complex being discussed.
Neither are going anywhere anytime soon.
NOLA is also a total shithole.

Saints definitely aren’t leaving. And as long as the Pels are winning, they aren’t leaving either.

Additionally, we have space for a football & basketball complex inside the city. Manhattan does not. Not even close to the same comparison.

The Seattle Pelicans. Makes about as much sense as the Utah Jazz. I'd hate to see it happen, my son is 3 and loves basketball. Bought cheap seat season tickets to LSU and he couldn't be happier. I'd love to take him to some Pels games but I just don't feel it's safe. Putting my personal safety and property is one thing, bringing a 3 year old into that shithole is another. I really hope they turn it around or as soon as Gayle goes we will also have the San Antonio Saints.

IDK, but the Saints are extremely regional. There are a lot of people from places like Laplace, Biloxi, the Northshore, and so on. A 40-mile drive feels like about the median.
New Orleans is very parochial. Uptown people have a blind spot with respect to the 'region' but the region exists and supports the Saints.

Like the Texans or Bucs?
The risk out there is that not only is New Orleans becoming less and less attractive to outsiders because of crime concerns......even on a good day, it's a very small market.
Gayle Benson has "pledged" to keep the Saints in Louisiana long term, but have their actually signed a lease in the dome beyond 2025? Should we expect them to demand a new retractable roof stadium somewhere late next year or threaten to leave? That might mean moving the Saints to Tiger Stadium for a couple of seasons while the dome is actually replaced entirely. But you might run into resistance from state taxpayers in investing close to $1 billion in a location that is far less desirable than it used to be.
IMO the state should quietly develop a plan to build a new retractable roof stadium somewhere in case the Saints demand one. Somewhere easy to get to for New Orleans, the north shore, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette and can be used for college sports, concerts, etc.
The dome is not exactly a spring chicken. It's not the state of the art arena that other markets can potentially provide and what NFL teams are often getting now. The Saints are definitely there until 2025. But beyond that, the state taxpayers are going to have to throw a huge amount of cash into the dome every year to keep them until 2035 and beyond. And there will be the possibility that they threaten to leave without getting a brand new facility.
And that's not a surprise. The state taxpayers are accustomed to subsidizing amenities for New Orleans. The broke, corrupt, and small city can't support itself anyways.

What is it they subsidize with money not collected in New Orleans?
