Hapless host Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show is losing the ratings war to FOX News rival Greg Gutfeld — and the TV flop’s sinking number has left NBC brass with buyer’s remorse, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Nearly 19 months after the Peacock Network handed Fallon a whopping $80 million five-year contract extension, The Tonight Show is drawing under 1.3 million eyeballs — less than half the audience of upstart Gutfeld!

But that number is even more shocking when compared to Fallon’s celebrated debut! The Saturday Night Live alum, 48, chalked up an impressive 11 million viewers when he first took over for outgoing legend Jay Leno — but now he’s also being bested in the ratings by Stephen Colbert’s CBS Late Show!
A source said NBC regrets the funnyman’s pricey long-term deal and added, “The network knows the days are gone when tens of millions of people would tune in for The Tonight Show — but they were counting on Jimmy to do better than this!”

Meanwhile, Fallon has attracted 30 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, which shows snippets of the chatfest’s segments. But a tipster pointed out, “That really doesn’t drive up ad rates for the regular show — and the network doesn’t want The Tonight Show to exist just to feed YouTube.”

Another insider insisted Jimmy’s ratings are solid but another source added, “There have already been shake-ups in the production staff, and even with Jimmy’s contract, he isn’t immune. NBC would buy him out if they believe they can find another host who can deliver more viewers.”

late night talk shows need to accept that they’re a dying breed as they’ve always existed and adapt.

Who is watching these shows? You never hear anyone mention anything at all about them. It’s like they don’t even exist.

Colbert went full on shite lib therapy which was probably pulling ratings during Trump but what’s the draw now?

At least half of the problem is the corporate and media environment now surrounding the late night shows.

You can't be funny as easily if you're worried about messaging as much or more than entertaining.

In the 90s Letterman was my favorite. 00s Daily Show and Colbert Report were very entertaining. There's just nothing today in the late night time slots worth watching. I've tried.

They should give it back to Conan. The viewer numbers would be about the same since Conan isn’t as broad of an appeal, but at least the show would be entertaining/watchable.

I’ll never understand why or how Jimmy Fallon has been as successful as he has. Never made sense 20 years ago, and doesn’t now. He’s awful outside of being sort of talented musically. But he’s a bad interviewer and he’s just not very funny, which are arguably the two most important aspects of late night TV.

There's a lot to this.

Gutfeld is the lone conservative/libertarian show in that genre and he's clever as frick. It's not surprising that he's made massive gain against the network shows, I think what holds him back though is that every night it's the same group: him, Tyrus, Kat Timpf and then some random person (usually a comedian or another FNC employee) bitching about the lunacy of Democrats.

I'ld like to see him have someone from across the aisle to discuss topics or projects they are working on and give them a little challenge (much like Colbert did on his CC show).

There's just so much content available nowadays. Gone are the days where people would turn on a late night talk show before going to bed.

Nowadays people will just throw on an episode of whatever latest show their watching on any one of their numerous streaming services or watch a streaming rerun of The Office or Friends for the 20th time.

Isn't Gutfeld beating all the late night shows in the ratings?

Last great late night host was Craig Ferguson. His show blows out any of the current late night shows. It was both funny and bizarre, embracing the fact that he was on at 1 AM. But also he had the best monologue of any late night host I have seen and his interviews were completely natural with no pre screened questions.

And to think they replaced him with James Corden. It makes me want to choke on my spit.

NO one from the other side is going to go on TV with Gutfeld. He is too smart and quick and would eat them alive. They know it, he knows it, we know it.

Fallon is a great guy and I liked him on SNL, but he’s just not a great late night host and late night shows are dying

He was the best "Letterman" version of a host and, frankly, a better interviewer in some ways. My gut tells me Ferguson could have gone a little straighter and been the best alternative to Johnny as well.

We can face facts, though. Johnny was just so good, so effortlessly good in that role that everyone else is racing for "second best ever". Couple that with the fact the industry has changed, drastically, and there just isn't the need for such a show as we approach the mid-21st Century. Hollywood and the music industry absolutely NEEDED Johnny out there every night pushing this or that. He knew that and tried to entertain folks along the way to making a shite ton of money. That time is long past.
