Impressive for that far of a fall.

I read somewhere that they just let them burn themselves out. It would make sense bc what are you going to throw on a lithium fire that wouldn’t accelerate the fire. Water certainly wouldn’t be high on that list.

Two adults and two children were rescued from a Tesla that plunged 250 feet off a cliff Monday morning in San Mateo County, California, officials said.

Probably because it was NOT set to autopilot.

I recall hearing it discussed that Teslas are engineered to land on all 4s when rolling. I think it was said in Musk’s interview with Rogan.

Impressive that the children were reported to be unharmed.

I wouldn't say they're engineered to do that but rather it's an unintended benefit of the design. EV's are much better balanced and have a lower center of gravity than ICE vehicles.

Aren’t Teslas very safe due to lack of engine?

Maybe not specifically because of the lack of engine, but the low center of gravity due to the big, heavy battery running along the bottom makes them less likely to roll.

Could be that this helped keep it upright when it hit the ground.

EDIT: I was way slow posting this

Does the fact that it is a Tesla have anything to do with the fact that it went over a cliff?

Nope do you think if I drive my 5.0 into Lake Erie they mention ford … probably not.

Some of those mountain roads in California are very anxiety inducing.

Very true. Especially for the passenger riding shotgun.
Group hairpin turns, massive elevation drops, and minimal guard rails it can be quite nervy.
I recommend State route 49 (get it?) through the Motherlode areas of California for max queasy driving.

it’s a pretty damn good look for Tesla.

That car can take a 250 ft fall and keep you alive.

This...incredible no one died.

Driver must have grown up in the 80s and knew exactly what to do.

I love the extremes with your two possible explanations.

Or maybe the "Devil's Slide" has something to do with it? Why do we even HAVE a Devil's Slide?!
Seems inherently unsafe.

While counterintuitive water is how they put out lithium battery fires, it does take a massive amount of water though.

Agreed, they are like loaded dice with a very low CoG for a car. More serendipity than engineering.

With no engine noise, witnesses could hear the screams of the occupants from great distances.

I don't know if it made it to the OT, but a German guy had his Tesla on Autopilot as he caught a catnap. The police tried to pull the car over, but the Tesla wouldn't stop and led the police on a chase.

Maybe the cops didn’t know this, but what you do in that situation is get in front of the Tesla and slow down to a stop. Both Autopilot and Full Self Driving will stop the car in that instance.

Hope the driver was arrested.
