How often do you clean your family member’s grave?

Who cleans the overgrowth, debris, bird shite, and whatever else is on it? Who checks in on your grandparent’s grave?

A lot of the time a Cemetary hires a guy or a crew to come in to mow and whatever else.
I had a job at 15 doing that. I'd go wake up a couple of my friends and bribe them with some beer and weed to load up their family's lawnmowers/equipment and come with me. Was ideal being I was paid by the job and not by the hour.

My parents always check on Dad’s family plot before All Saints Day. They paid for ‘perpetual care’, but there’s always overgrowth that they have to clean up before the annual Blessing of the Graves. As I get older, I think it’s more important to take care of our loved ones resting place.

I’ve never visited anyone’s grave. Just not my thing.

Whenever it needs it. Go visit them and check on it occasionally.

I go in old graveyards often. And the truth is, past a generation, 2 if they are lucky…no one.
Nothing but forgotten neglected stones slowly gathering moss, being eaten by the weather until they are nearly illegible, and eventually, ground back down to dust, paved over and a strip mall set on top of them.

my family members are in a mausoleum. So, no real cleaning. I do bring flowers and sit and talk to them. Kind of like you see folks in the movies do.

This all saints day I went with my grandpa to visit various family members’ graves. He told stories of his dad re-covering the graves with dirt and other tasks they did each year. I had no idea these things weren’t automatically taken care of by the cemetery.

Don't bother on my account. You put me in the ground, let the ground run things. Just keep me in your heart for a while.

Why? Are they going to complain to management?

I’m sure in the fema camp they’re just gonna mass grave us but I always thought it was cool when you see those 200 year old graves that nobody cleans

My family had an uncle that was killed in World War II and buried in Europe. For a long time (pre-internet) we didn't know where, just that he died fighting in Germany at the very end of the war and they buried him somewhere with his brothers in arms. We later found out he was buried in a military cemetery in the Netherlands.
It turns out this town in the Netherlands where the US military cemetery is located assigns a resident of the town to take care of a specific grave and if you go over there to visit the grave of a family member you can meet this person who takes care of your grave. Some random Dutch woman cleaned my uncle's grave and put flowers on it for over 30 years. She never knew him obviously. Every grave has a personal caretaker and it is a great honor that they take very seriously. Those WWII cemeteries are hallowed ground to them. Pretty cool.

It’s maintained by church. Just paint it once/year.

This is why I will be cremated. Seeing those little cemeteries that end up across from a Dollar General is the most horrifying thing ever.
May you live your eternal life looking at poopy diapers thrown out the window of the local dollar store.

Been awhile, need to go by and check on my father's side. His parents, him, and my brother. My mother's parents are in a mausoleum, and she donated her body to science. I'll be cremated.
