I finally got around to playing this game after all the drama had subsided. Around launch, I actually cancelled my pre-order and picked up Day's Gone instead. It was $10.00 on the Thanksgiving PSN sale, so I thought I'd finally pick it up.

First, the game is incredibly well made from a technical perspective. The graphics aren't an enormous leap from Uncharted 4, but visual direction is impressive. Exploring the post-apocalyptic cityscape is a joy.

I really like how all the enemies you fight have names. You hear the NPCs all having casual conversations with each other before a fire fight breaks out. They will shout for each other when someone is killed, etc.

The gameplay still perplexes me. The games in the Uncharted franchise are some of the most technically solid third person shooters around, yet the same developers seem to go out of their way to make the gunplay in TLOU feel as clunky and unfun as possible.

I get that shooting is not the purpose of the game, which would be fine if the game did not constantly force you into combat encounters with large amounts of enemies. The WLF in particular had numbers that would put any local militia warlord in the Uncharted franchise to shame.

The criticism regarding the game going out of its way to appear "woke" is absolutely valid. There might only be three white males in the entire game. Every character is either a lesbian, transgender, bisexual, or knows someone who is.

There are two pregnant women in the game. One of which is very visibly pregnant and accompanies you into a warzone, where she's literally involved in a car wreck, crawling on her belly, and performing parkour.

The entire premise of the game, being Joel's death, seems shock for the sake of shock value not because it presents a very compelling narrative, and that I think is the biggest sin this game commits.

There's not enough meat on the bone narratively speaking to justify a 40 hour plot-heavy action game.

There are long stretches of the game where you are just trying to get from point A to B without any actual plot exposition which just serve as a means to pad out the game's length.

Things do happen sometimes, but most of it either happens to quickly (again shock value) and/or to characters you just don't care about.

Playing as Abby in particular is a slog. I think Abby is a fine character. She just looks ridiculous, even for a female soldier, and she's not at all what even most women would find attractive let alone men.

Allowing you to play as Abby for a significant chunk of time is a neat narrative trick, but they failed to give her anything actual sensical to do to fill the time. She spends the first half trying to get to the Aquarium to go see Owen for some reason. Along the way, she meets two Seraphites who are on the run. She befriends the Seraphites and saves their lives. Somehow, despite spending her life murdering their kind by the hundreds, then she becomes absolutely obsessed with them, risks her live to go back to where she left them, saves them, and then brings them back to the Aquarium.

Then, there's a long detour where you have to go to a hospital to find medicine for one of them.

3 hours later, you get back to the aquarium. One of them escapes and tries to flee back home. You and the other follow to this island that is under attack by your WLF friends but at this point Abby starts murdering everyone regardless of whether they are WLF or a Seraphite all while saying stuff like "Damn you Isaac" which is about the most egregious example of cognitive dissonance I have ever seen in a video game.

It’s not even close to being “woke”, it’s two main characters are Ellie who was gay in the first one and Abby who is straight both who are white.

Sounds like you’re the one obsessed with race and gender and by the way one of the more sensible characters was Owen
quote:

One of which is very visibly pregnant and accompanies you into a warzone, where she's literally involved in a car wreck, crawling on her belly, and performing parkour.

Mel did no parkour and Dina was very early into her pregnancy
quote:

Every character is either a lesbian, transgender, bisexual, or knows someone who is.

Ellie is gay, Dina is bi, and the kid was trans that’s it. In the first game Ellie, Bill, Riley and Frank were all gay.
quote:

The entire premise of the game, being Joel's death,

That was the catalyst to start Ellie’s story but not the premise. The game was about revenge, mistakes, consequences, and forgiveness. Joel’s selfishness led to him killing the doctors and Abby’s dad to save Ellie, Ellie hated that Joel made that choice without her, Ellie told Joel that she may be able to forgive Joel but he died before she had a chance to, Abby killed Joel for killing her dad, Ellie murdered all of Abby’s friends and boyfriend which in turn caused Ellie to lose her friends. It’s a story about revenge is bad obviously but also about how all of it could have been stopped if either Ellie or Abby stopped what they were doing and just forgave the person. That’s why Ellie doesn’t kill Abby because it would accomplish nothing but just lead to more death.
quote:

seems shock for the sake of shock value n

Nope it actually shows that there are consequences to everyone’s actions even the most beloved characters. Joel killed a lot of people in that hospital, it’s not surprising he’d face consequences one day for it
quote:

shock value)

Something shocking happening doesn’t mean it’s simply shock value, every big moment had a narrative purpose
quote:

she's not at all what even most women would find attractive let alone men.

Yeah this is just entirely subjective
quote:

She spends the first half trying to get to the Aquarium to go see Owen for some reason.
She goes to Owen because it was reported that he was injured and could be dead, she went to the aquarium because that’s where they went on dates when they were younger
quote:

she becomes absolutely obsessed with them,

Because she’s not a total monster and realizes one of them is a kid
quote:

which is about the most egregious example of cognitive dissonance I have ever seen in a video game.

Not really, it was clear that she was never a fan of Isaac and that the war was bullshite before that part

This is what makes it a horrible game and story to me. Ellie killing Abby finishes that cycle or violence just like letting her go does. Revenge was needed and isn’t bad in that situation. It’s completely justified and makes logical sense. WAY more logical sense than Ellie letting her go

And the message of “forgive and stop the violence” is very hippy/woke

No it wasn’t, look at what happened to Abby. Her father was killed by Joel and all revenge got her was her friends killed.

It’s a pretty understandable take, it’s something that Owen points out to Abby in a flashback and if she listens to him everything else never happens. Part of the reason for Ellie’s rampage is because she didn’t get to apologize to Joel and let him know she forgives him. Hence why we had the flashback of her and Joel having their last talk together before his death during the fight with Abby.

If you watch the 2017 trailer Abby looks like a normal person. I don't know why they changed her to look like Ronnie Coleman in the final version.

You mean the trailer where everyone thought she was Ellie’s mom? She was pretty jacked even in that one.

It’s real simple.

The game sucks because they killed Joel……early.

End of thread.

TLOU2 could have had “woke” in the title and dawgfan would still claim it wasn’t woke and that it is the perfect game.

I’m getting a little concerned that dawgfan is actually Neil Druckmann.

It's definitely "woke". Maybe not woke enough for him though.

Ah yes playing as Abby. They were trying to pull off a MGS2 Raiden maneuver and failed miserably.

How would it finish the cycle?

Did Ellie not also kill off the brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and friends within Abby's group? If anything, one could argue those actions are left unresolved despite Ellie's mercy. However, Ellie's choice is ultimately about her own journey, not an attempt to right some existential cycle of violence....though clearly the game wants the audience to recognize that particular theme of violence begetting violence until people are just reflexively balkanized and in an endless cycle of revenge killing. But for Ellie, it's not about that.

However had she chosen to commit violence, either she must choose to kill innocent Lev, or, the cycle passes on to him the way Ellie's parental love for Joel led to her sense of injustice and desire for revenge. So either way, no, you're wrong here.

Picked up on PS Store for $10 too. Within first couple scenes, we’re already on the lesbian victimhood as the main character kisses a chick and was apparently called some name by a n old white guy. Of ALL the possibilities they could’ve started the game off with, the writers made sure to remind you of their agenda. No one cares. We just want to kill zombies.

I had a good laugh on the Movie Board about TLOU2.

Movie Board

quote:

The [TLOU2] leaks that people got mad about actually had a lot of shite wrong too.

"Guys, that two hours of leaked gameplay and cutscenes were wrong!"

I don't know the deep lore of the Movie Board, but for some reason there's always wild accusations and delusions responding whenever SouthEasterKaiju links a YouTube video.

Don't know why people start losing their minds over something so banal, but the clown show keeps me entertained.

I agree

Women shouldn’t be in games unless they’re hot or show boobs

This is why the Witcher 3 and Nier are such good games and most other games suck

Also mgs 5 is good too
