Anyone who follows SEC football knows that if you don`t
have depth on the DL in the 4th quarter it will come back and bite you.Toward the end of the season we saw that come
to pass.LSU had 1 lineman who played 80-90% of the snaps
this year.Until the TIGERS build some backup depth at that
position I don`t care who the DC is you are going to wear
down.

Good post. And I agree the lack of depth can only be masked so far. House did a good job all things considered.

We had only 5 or 6 ints all year (which I attribute to lack of playmakers in the secondary).

But if I can revisit the A&M and UGA games, they were effective from the first snap. I don't think that can fully be explained by our DL being tired.

Rather, IMO, we were getting good vs the DT QBs in large by how Harold was being used. But against the teams that ran the ball more physically (A&M and UGA), we were too light up front.

I realize that too is a depth issue to a point but it's also a scheme issue as well.

I trust in Mathieu's assessment of him a year ago. I scan be patient on this coach and let his recruits and the process unfold.

Dominant is a tricky work here and relative in the context of big time college football today.

But I am confident in House.

This is why I’m confident in House. He’s been a fantastic play caller way more often than not.

This staff needs to be better at preparation during the week. Being behind 2 or more scores in most non-rent-a-win games got old. No guarantee you can do that from year to year and still win those types of games.

I know, need better players, need more depth, halftime adjustments were good, etc. But LSU needs to be better in the first half of games next season.

IMO couch House is the man! Let's get another CB, 2 LBers, and another DL through the portal!

The defense, like the entire team, struggled on the road. They gave up an extremely stingy 30.12% 3rd down conversion rate at home, which would have been good enough for top 10 in the country. They gave up over 50% on the road, which is why they ultimately ranked 94th.

That’s a massive disparity, which isn’t that surprising considering how young we were in spots and how chaotic the defensive roster was this year. We lost Smith for the season on the first drive and Burns for several games. Foucha didn’t play early due to suspension, Baskerville barely played in the opener because he was supposed to be suspended (overturned at the last second) and it took time for Perkins to emerge. Ward and Brooks swapped spots. JBC had to move to Safety at one point and then was missed badly when we played at A&M. When you have as little depth as we did, there’s only so many moves you can make to work around having this many impact guys missing at times.

Also note that the 41.86% they gave up this season was actually a slight improvement over last year with less overall talent and experience. Last year’s defense that started the season was far and away better than the best version of this year’s squad, especially in the secondary.

In other words, your anecdotal opinions lack context and frankly aren’t worth much because of it. Give the man time to improve the depth and overall talent level. The players and execution were MUCH bigger issues than the scheme.

Yes, after he gets a couple of his recruiting clases and with better depth especially on the defensive line.
House also had a Top 10 defense at Kentucky before he left for the KC job.

Recruiting on the DL and LB needs to take a step up next year. Never concerned about DBs in Louisiana bc even if you strike out on elite national targets you can make do with who you have in state. I think better development has to be shown on the first and second level of the defense next season to get the higher level recruits. Did any of our D Linemen or linebackers look like they took a massive step forward throughout the year? That’s what gets used against you in recruiting. Offense did markedly improve through the year. Look at what they did with Mason Taylor and the o line.

There’s going to be a lot of new starters on the defense. It’s probably going to take a few games to see what they’ll be capable of.

We gave up a ton of points in SEC play (28.6ppg) and most of the “adjustments” he laughably gets so much credit for was just putting Perkins on the field around halftime after getting shredded to start a couple games. He had some bad personnel choices as well. We’ll see how it goes but he’s being hyped for a very average season.

I don't think any defenses are really dominant these days. That is a bygone era for better or for worse.

By the way, thank you for spelling dominant correctly. That is becoming very rare.
