We want depth that will turn into starters. Not depth just to be depth.

Do you not think we will add o-linemen in the portal? We have a 5 star tackle coming in and 4 star. Calm down you sound like my wife.

I really hope this is sarcasm. If not then that is a terrible take.

NIL and portal are unfettered free agency with NO RULES NOT amateur sports.

So these kids are some how lazy because they are going somewhere else to try and play more? Do you think they are going to do less work at their new school as a starter or battling for a starting position? The notion that each kid that transfers doesn’t want to work hard makes no sense, to play D1 football you have to work hard.

You missed the entire point of the post.

I did not compare the talent of our roster to West Virginia. I used them to illustrate how far behind we are in DEPTH of talent compared to teams like GA, Bama, OSU, etc…Of course we have better players than WV. Do you think it is good that we had 13 fewer 3,4, and 5 star players than GA?

We will get a great recruiting class and some portal guys. But the shear number of quality players that we need to compete a full season is going to take more than this year to put together. The portal does not have enough top tier talent available.

And when the following year they transfer because will and Emory are still starting then what?

Yes we have great talent but we lack depth big time. Now we have to replace not only the 13 legitimate players that we did not have this year, but we also have to replace the Seniors, NFL guys and the transfers.

This is a much bigger problem than just saying "everyone is facing the same problem."

No, we are starting from a much different spot than everyone else.

The counter-argument is that the removal of signing limits benefits us tremendously.

We ended last year in a deep hole in terms of scholarship numbers. It wasn't as bad as the bowl game made it appear, but it was bad. On top of that, we had a new staff coming in with limited time to make any big waves with HS recruits.

The temporary rule allowing us to “replace” up to 7 players helped a ton. We wound up with 15 transfer portal guys, most of whom were key contributors.

Now we can take it a step further and sign as many guys as we want up to the 85 cap and the staff has had a full year to prepare for it. I don’t know if we get back to 85 or not by next fall, but I’m fairly confident the numbers will be better than they were this fall. We already have 24 HS commits (with a couple of key targets yet to announce) and we haven’t taken a single portal guy yet AFAIK. We could easily wind up with 35+ additions.

It is what it is. After the gutting from last year no one thought we were near as talented as those teams. And these transfers won’t make a difference they will be replaced with proven players to add experience and depth

Not for long. There will be other big time players filling the void coming in their vacated spots.

Listen to his point. We didnt have the depth to lose, So now we have to double time to keep up with what we had and try to add depth.
Its a good point. Just cause you can replace them completely doesn't make them as valuable as someone who has seen how we do things now. Better to have people accustomed to the system rather than reboot every year.

Portal has been terrible so far imo. Anyone that isnt starting immediately is usually off to somewhere else. I do agree with players sticking around a program 3 years being able to leave and play immediately. But fresmen leaving at the end of their First year is just ridiculous. Depth is always going to be tough to have under current conditions

Eventually, everyone will end up where they are supposed to be. Live by the portal, die by the portal. Complain about it all you want, but this is the new reality - portal, infinite transfers, NIL - this is "modern" college football.

Not all. But freshman and sophomores and leaving. They don’t want to work and earn it

You play your best 5 in college. And then you try and play your 6th and 7th best guy.

So if you’re transfering because You get 0 playing time It’s because you’re being 6-7 guys.

Heard will play guard for a year or two if he can’t beat out Emory or Will

And some of these guys won’t come out of the portal.

We had 72 players on the roster that were rated with 3 stars or above. 72! Damn near every quality team has 83-85.

The problem with the list is that it is based on player ratings coming out of high school. Josh Williams and Miles Frazier, for example, are shown as 2-star players. Garner, Ramos, Shorts, Mashburn and both long snappers are NA and not included in the 72 at all. I think the approach you are taking is solid and there does seem to be some truth to LSU having a greater depth issue than other schools, but I think that list somewhat overstates the problem.

So do they not have to work at the school they transfer to? Do they not have to earn playing time? If Cam Wire transfers to Mizzouri will he not have to work hard to play?

Not necessarily some of these key depth players will go to smaller schools where they know they’ll be starters
