This is so sad. I'm trying not to tear up. RIP little man.

Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Abel graduated from Murrell Dobbins Career & Technical Education High School in North Philly in 1949 and, like most graduates at the time, was quickly thrust into adulthood. A couple of years after she was planning proms, she was dealing with a pregnancy. A daughter was born in 1950 and immediately put up for adoption.

Sounds like Betsy was a little loose back then.

quote:

What remains unclear, for now, is how or where Zarelli met Abel, whether he knew she’d been pregnant and had a child. He was five years older and living in the Callowhill home with his family when the 1950 census was taken. Abel’s relative said one of her sisters may have lived in West Philadelphia. Abel did, too, the relative said, on the second floor of a walk-up apartment with Plunkett and their daughter, who was born in December 1956.

I guess this is obviously the time period to concentrate on and brings the Plunkett man into the suspect pool, assuming the boy was living with the mom and not given up for adoption like her first child.

Seems way to early to blame the parents here. It would be weird if you had a small child living with you for 4yrs and no one(family/ extended family/ friends/ neighborhood busy bodies) notice it missing.

If I'm reading the story right the mother has a history of putting children up for adoption.

Yes the Reddit board was speculating about her husband, especially since they had a child born in 1956, which brings bassinet purchase (box) into the timeline. But there could have been some informal type of adoption or fostering situation, whether ongoing or intermittent.

Also bio mom and her husband had four children, three surviving to adulthood, but one girl born in 1964 who died shortly after birth. Cause of death was hydrops erythroblastosis fetalis, which is caused by an Rh issue. I cannot shake the thought that JAZ was never in good health in his short lifetime.

Was he given up for adoption or does the “M” story from early 2000s (?) figure into it? The one where he was purportedly sold to M’s mother. Some details of that story ring true. I suppose if a mother gave the child up for legs adoption at birth she wouldn’t have recognized him at age 4 and couldn’t be held responsible. But if she sold him, that’s another thing altogether. So very sad.

M's story was too accurate to not have some sort of direct knowledge about what happened. IIRC, she specifically hit two key details that weren't released to the public. She said the boy had been drowned in a bathtub (corner identified the boy's fingers as pruny, as if he had just gotten out of the shower) and that he had eaten beans for dinner that night (corner found baked beans inside the boy's stomach).

She either knew who he was/what happened or she got astronomically lucky with two extremely random guesses.

Guess I’m just a big softie then. I don’t want to see pics of a dead child ever

They didn't know they had a half-sibling. They didn't grow up with him.

I'm guessing you're a shitty bot but if you are a human wtf brought you to this thread and made you register an account today to bump this old thread that was already long gone?

A good example of how shite has always been around. If this happened today, we'd have hand-wringing threads about "what is the world coming to".

May this poor soul RIP.
