I have inside information on this. Transformers were shot with a rifle which drained out the oil, causing them to fail catastrophically.
You need oil to move electricity to your electric car?

Yes, it's true. My son is in the dark right now in Moore County

Hopefully the Media slander someone and get their teeth sued out of their mouths.

Right wing eco terrorist, nope never stop blaming republicans for leftist stupidity

?How did they time the shot to drain the oil to shut down the transformer at the beginning of the queer show. Depending on the size of the round .223 to .308 , hitting the round low enough to allow gravity acceleration , and free volume of oil space the dude had to be a master electrical engineer in transformer design to achieve that timing.

And, like all the other “acts of terrorism” this one was conducted by a mentally disturbed individual who probably had a gripe with the city or county.
The juxtaposition of the drag show to the act of vandalism made me laugh. A disturbed individual would go more directly to the scene of what upset him.
They’re not equipped with a sane rationale that would motivate him to just knock out the lights on the show. He would need much more instant gratification than that.

transformers are easy to change with minimal outage time
This is true for pole and pad mount distribution transformers. However, power transformers (substation transformers) are not easy to replace unless the utility has a spare on hand. These are highly-engineered, built-to-order transformers that carry lead times of 52 weeks to well over 2 years, depending on the manufacturer. Field repair and remanufactured units are an option as well, but that assumes that either a field repair is possible or that a similar unit is available sitting on the "shelf" somewhere. Neither of these options is a slam dunk.
I obviously don't know the details on what failed and what's required to fix them, but it sounds to me like these guys knew exactly what they were doing.

So someone is mad at a drag show and their response is shooting out a transformer?

Everything is blamed on right wing activists. It is really getting old.

I thought about this a good bit. Shooting out the core & coil would be a helluva task on a device big enough to account for a 40k customer outage.
Unit that size would likely have condenser bushings on at least the primary. Those have the nasty habit of discharging fault debris into the tank when they fail (reason pf tests on hv bushings are a good PM habit).
I've settled on an explanation that this was likely an a-hole(s) aiming for porcelain and hitting the jackpot.
Which brings me to a professional pet peeve

The shooter probably just popped a hole in a cooling fin which in Ukraine they could fix in 20 minutes by using a gasket nut and bolt. another 20 minutes for refilling with oil. The oil drained could well have have had pcb's in it however and will require a hundred million dollars of fed epa supervised cleanup

It has happened in another location as well.
Does anyone know how much time elapsed between those two?

We’re past due for this war going hot. This country is worth fighting for, glad to see someone not bowing to the fascists
